Aspirant Dies by Suicide Days Before NEET Examination

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 22-year-old medical aspirant allegedly died by suicide at his home in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, on the morning of June 19, just two days prior to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-UG scheduled for June 21. The individual, identified as Jatin Kumar, had reportedly been preparing for this competitive medical entrance examination for several years without success.

Family members recounted that Jatin had isolated himself in his study room on the evening of June 18. When he failed to emerge the following morning, they checked on him and discovered he had died. The family quickly contacted the authorities after making this distressing find.

Police investigators from Vijay Nagar police station, along with a forensic team, arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted. An inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death was promptly initiated and Jatin’s body was subsequently sent for post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Video Evidence in Investigation

Authorities reported recovering a video from Jatin’s mobile device, which is believed to have been recorded shortly before his passing. In the footage, Jatin spoke about the exhaustion stemming from repeated attempts to qualify for NEET and his frustrations with the ongoing examination cycle.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Nagar Kotwali, Upasana Pandey, the footage is currently under examination as part of the ongoing investigation. The police are also in the process of recording statements from family members to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances leading to this tragic event.

This incident has drawn attention to the examination process, particularly following the cancellation of the May 3 NEET exam by the National Testing Agency, attributed to allegations of a paper leak and other irregularities. As such, public scrutiny regarding the examination process is heightened.

Separate Incident in Indore

In a related but separate occurrence, a 21-year-old NEET aspirant named Avantika Maurya died in suspicious circumstances in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on the night of June 18. Avantika, originally from Dhar district, had been residing with her elder sister, a medical practitioner, while preparing for the same medical entrance examination.

The incident reportedly transpired around 11:30 pm when family members heard a loud sound. Avantika had been on her mobile phone while standing on a balcony before ascending to the upper level of the four-storey building. Moments later, they found her critically injured and immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries early in the morning of June 19.

Police have stated that they are investigating the scenario surrounding Avantika’s death. They are currently examining CCTV footage, phone records, and other relevant evidence as part of the inquiry. As of now, no suicide note has been located.
