Ashwin Backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Debut Snub, Stresses Experience

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ravichandran Ashwin recently addressed criticism surrounding Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s position in the Indian cricket team after the 15-year-old was not included in the debut match against Ireland. Vaibhav, despite a stellar performance during the Indian Premier League, has yet to make his international debut. Following an impressive season, he also showcased his abilities for India A in a tri-nation series in Sri Lanka, where he achieved the fastest fifty in List A history.

Sooryavanshi’s exclusion from the opening T20I against Ireland raised questions regarding youth opportunities in the squad. Ashwin remarked that there were benefits to being part of the team environment, even if it meant sitting on the sidelines, observing senior players. He noted that gaining experience in a high-pressure setting can be invaluable for a young talent.

Ashwin Responds to Critics

Following backlash from critics who questioned the decision to have a young player like Sooryavanshi in the squad without immediate playing time, Ashwin defended the practice of allowing junior players to assist senior team members. In a video on his YouTube channel, he probed the negativity surrounding the idea of carrying drinks for established players, emphasising the learning potential in such roles.

Ashwin pointed out that the attitude towards supporting roles has changed over the years, expressing his puzzlement about why carrying water for senior teammates has become viewed unfavourably. He reflected on his own experiences in cricket, stating that he was proud to have supported senior players as a ballboy in earlier years. “When did running onto the field to provide water become less significant?” he asked.

As he engaged with viewers, Ashwin reassured them of Sooryavanshi’s potential, suggesting that the youngster will get his opportunity to play. He reiterated that players like Vaibhav should be nurtured for future roles within the team, implying that strong players can take time to develop.

Looking Ahead to the England Series

As preparations for the five-match T20I series against England commence, there is anticipation around Sooryavanshi potentially receiving his debut. The assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate highlighted that the decision to hold back Sooryavanshi was strategic, intending to give the established World Cup-winning openers more playing time as the team transitions under the leadership of captain Shreyas Iyer.

The T20I series against England is scheduled to begin on July 1, providing an opportunity for the Indian team to showcase new talents while relying on the experience of seasoned players. Fans and cricket analysts alike are keen to see how the team dynamics play out and if Sooryavanshi will step onto the field as an international cricketer.

With Ashwin advocating for a balanced approach to player development and experience, the upcoming matches will be pivotal for both the players and the coaching staff in establishing a framework that prepares the next generation of cricketers for international competitions.
