Kris Srikkanth Criticises Shreyas Iyer Over Sooryavanshi’s Treatment

The CSR Journal Magazine

Former Indian cricket captain Kris Srikkanth has expressed strong dissatisfaction with Shreyas Iyer’s handling of young player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during India’s recent tour of the United Kingdom. Srikkanth’s criticism centres on Iyer’s defence of the decision to exclude the 15-year-old Sooryavanshi from the final T20I against England in Southampton, which resulted in a significant 56-run defeat for the team.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth conveyed disappointment particularly with Iyer’s comments during the toss preceding the match. Iyer remarked that the team needed to decide on the best course for future matches, a statement that, according to Srikkanth, failed to justify dropping Sooryavanshi in favour of returning player Sanju Samson.

Srikkanth’s frustration was apparent as he questioned the logic of the selections made by Iyer. He noted that Sooryavanshi, who recently became the youngest player to debut for India at the age of 15 years and 99 days, deserved more consideration regarding his inclusion in the squad.

Sooryavanshi’s Brief Performance and Potential

Sooryavanshi was introduced into the national team after a remarkable performance in the IPL 2026, where he garnered the Orange Cap as the youngest player by scoring 776 runs. After seating out the initial matches, he made an appearance in three games during the series against England but struggled to match his earlier success, with scores of 14, 13, and 15.

Despite showcasing flashes of his explosive ability, he was dismissed by England paceman Jofra Archer twice, raising questions about his preparedness and the decision to drop him after an initial opportunity. Srikkanth argued that this treatment does not bode well for the development of young talent like Sooryavanshi.

In light of these events, Srikkanth drew parallels to his own experience as captain in 1989 when he encouraged a young Sachin Tendulkar by promising him consistent play, thereby instilling confidence at a formative stage in the cricketer’s career. He expressed his concern that the current leadership group has failed to offer similar support to Sooryavanshi.

Criticism of Leadership and Selection Decisions

The turmoil within the Indian cricket team has attracted significant scrutiny, especially after they returned from the UK without securing a single victory, suffering defeats in both England and Ireland. The selection committee has faced backlash for the repeated changes in the batting order and for their management of players’ roles.

Samson, despite being named Player of the Tournament in the recent T20 World Cup, found himself discarded after three matches in England, while Sooryavanshi’s role has been limited following his high-profile debut. As the team prepares for the upcoming T20I tour of Zimbabwe, Samson has reportedly been omitted in favour of Prabhsimran Singh, further complicating the selection landscape.

With Sooryavanshi still retaining his place in the squad, there are growing concerns regarding the team’s overall strategy and the support being afforded to emerging players. Critics have observed the inconsistency in the leadership group’s approach, emphasising the need for a more structured plan to develop young talents within the team.
