The abrogation of Article 370 has led to notable advancements in infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir over the past seven years. Residents report significant enhancements in public services, including improved roads, electricity, and water supply. These changes are claimed to have improved the quality of daily life considerably in various parts of the Union Territory.

Talib Hussain, a resident of Nagam village in Budgam district, highlighted that basic infrastructure development has become more apparent at the grassroots level. He mentioned that previously, acquiring a simple electricity transformer would involve lengthy delays, but now village heads are empowered to install them more efficiently. This change, according to Hussain, has been particularly evident since the abrogation.

Moreover, he noted that the efficiency of delivery for government welfare schemes has also improved, making services more accessible to the local populace. Nevertheless, he emphasised that there remains a need for focused efforts in tribal areas to promote balanced development throughout the region.

Economic Opportunities and Tourism Growth

Geopolitical expert Dipankar Sengupta stated that the constitutional modifications enacted in 2019 have been instrumental in accelerating infrastructure growth, thereby fostering conditions for sustained economic advancement within the Union Territory. He indicated that improvements in road and rail transportation have brought remote areas into proximity with mainstream development, unlocking potential avenues for tourism, investment, and employment.

Sengupta also pointed out that certain locations in Jammu and Kashmir, such as Bhadarwah, Kishtwar, Panchari, Bani, and parts of Kathua, offer tourism potential that is comparable to well-known hill stations. Enhancing transport connectivity, he suggested, could stimulate job creation in sectors such as hospitality and transport, thereby benefiting the local economy significantly.

Future Prospects and Sectoral Development

The horticulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir has been noted for its long-standing reputation for producing quality apples and other fruits. However, Sengupta believes that there are opportunities to boost productivity through scientific management practices and value additions in farming. He encourages local entrepreneurs and youth to engage more actively in expanding this sector, which could lead to sustainable livelihoods.

He further mentioned the positive impact of continued investments in infrastructure, such as roads, railways, power, and healthcare on Jammu and Kashmir’s overall investment environment. Such developments are anticipated to motivate local investors to engage more with the economic opportunities arising from these advancements. Ensuring that the advantages of this economic growth remain within the region is crucial for the long-term prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir.
