Amit Shah Chairs 73rd Plenary Session of North Eastern Council in Shillong

Amit Shah, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, chaired the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Meghalaya, on June 4. The session was attended by prominent leaders, including Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region; CH Vijayashankar, the Governor of Meghalaya; and Conrad Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya. Other dignitaries included Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for the Development of North Eastern Region, and Govind Mohan, Union Home Secretary, among other regional Governors and Chief Ministers.

Focus on Development and Stability

During his address, Shah outlined the significant progress made in the North East region under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past 12 years. He stated that the foundation for a developed North East has been laid, which has led to qualitative transformations across all states in the region during this period. Shah remarked that a stable law-and-order framework is crucial for development, highlighting the signing of over 12 peace accords aimed at resolving various conflicts.

Shah claimed that the Modi administration has effectively tackled the issue of insurgency, leading to substantial improvements in infrastructure that connects Delhi with the North East. He emphasised that the infrastructure has seen a remarkable expansion, contributing to the emotional and geographical bridging of the region with the rest of the country.

The Home Minister pointed out that the diversity of the North East, comprising more than 200 tribal groups and dialects, is increasingly recognised as an asset globally. He noted that this rich tapestry of cultures fosters a sense of coexistence and resilience, which he deemed essential for the region’s development and recognition in the world.

Future Initiatives and Priorities

Shah urged states to leverage the findings of the High-Level Task Force’s report on cultural identity and development, referring to it as a guiding framework. He recommended utilising all available budgetary provisions to comprehensively implement the report’s recommendations. The discussion also covered sustainable development and the goal of self-reliance in various sectors, including dairy production.

He mentioned significant investments, including a semiconductor plant in Assam, which is projected to attract Rs 27,000 crore, alongside focused efforts to establish a healthcare hub in the North East. Shah highlighted the necessity for consistent monitoring of development initiatives and the aim to make key cities into multimodal logistics hubs.

Additionally, Shah called for a framework to increase milk production and establish dairy cooperatives in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board. He reiterated that the region’s abundant natural resources and potential in sectors such as hydropower and solar energy could prove pivotal for economic advancement.

Cultural Preservation and Technological Advancement

The Home Minister highlighted the critical importance of preserving the North East’s unique cultural identity, stating that losing even a single language would be a significant loss for India. He encouraged all stakeholders to work diligently in maintaining the region’s rich heritage, which could serve as a significant strength moving forward.

Shah also addressed the need for advancements in education and technological fields, advocating for the North East to be developed as a hub for digital skills such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics. As part of this vision, he outlined strategies to establish data centres in the region and integrate educational frameworks with industrial development goals.

In concluding his speech, Shah noted the significant reduction in civilian casualties due to peace initiatives and reaffirmed the ongoing efforts against narcotics in the region. He stressed the importance of a robust framework for justice and citizens’ rights, proposing that the North East could embark on a fresh path towards stability and prosperity through strategic planning and accountability.
