Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed Kanwariyas arriving in Haridwar for the annual Kanwar Yatra on August 4, 2026. He expressed his reverence for the Shiva devotees by showering flower petals on them from a helicopter and washing the feet of five pilgrims in a traditional display of respect. This gesture underscores the significance of the event for both devotees and the local community.

In addition to the ceremonial welcome, Chief Minister Dhami inaugurated the Chief Minister’s Health Service Camp located at the Alaknanda Hotel premises. He took the time to review the medical facilities and arrangements established to assist the pilgrims during their journey. His interaction with Kanwariyas from various states highlighted his commitment to ensuring their needs are met.

During the ceremony, the Chief Minister addressed the gathering, stating the government’s dedication to providing a safe and comfortable pilgrimage experience for every visitor to Devbhoomi, Uttarakhand. He emphasised that the Kanwar Yatra is not merely a religious observance but serves as a grand celebration of Indian traditions and social harmony.

Significance of Lord Shiva and Community Spirit

Chief Minister Dhami reflected on his previous five years of service during the Kanwar Yatra, describing Lord Shiva as a profound symbol of faith and devotion for millions. He acknowledged the challenging journeys that many devotees undertake, often spanning hundreds of kilometres, as they chant “Bam Bam Bhole.” He noted that the event also represents collective discipline, social unity, and dedication.

This year, over one crore Kanwariyas have successfully gathered holy water from the Ganga and proceeded to their respective destinations. Dhami pointed out that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, remarkable initiatives are underway to preserve and enhance India’s cultural heritage, citing projects like the Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor and the reconstruction of Kedarnath Dham as notable examples.

The Chief Minister also referred to the transformative efforts following the 2013 Kedarnath disaster, which have restored Kedarnath Dham into a dignified pilgrimage site through extensive renovations. New facilities such as the Aastha Path and Saraswati Ghat have been developed to enhance the experience for pilgrims, while proposed projects like the Ganga Corridor aim to boost both development and religious tourism in the state.

Safety Measures and Acknowledgments of Service

Emphasising the safety and well-being of all pilgrims, Chief Minister Dhami stated that a comprehensive approach has been taken, including CCTV monitoring, drone surveillance, and the establishment of health camps along pilgrimage routes. He urged devotees to maintain discipline and uphold the respectfulness of the pilgrimage experience throughout their journey.

Dhami expressed appreciation for the collective efforts of various agencies, including police, district administration, health personnel, sanitation workers, and NGOs, all of whom contribute to the success of the Kanwar Yatra. He acknowledged that the coordination and commitment of these individuals are critical for managing such a large-scale event.

During the event, he recognised the contributions of ten individuals, specifically five police officers and five sanitation workers, for their dedicated service throughout the pilgrimage. This recognition reflects the government’s gratitude towards those who work tirelessly to ensure the safety, cleanliness, and healthcare of millions participating in the Yatra.
