Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has called for the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the government of extreme measures against students during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ protest held on July 20. He described the recent police actions as oppressive, stating that the government used excessive force against the protesting youth. Following this, Kharge claimed that the police filed FIRs and detained protesters who had initially received assurances that no actions would be taken against them.

In a message posted on X, Kharge expressed his disdain towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, saying, “If there’s even a shred of shame left, get Amit Shah’s resignation.” He stated that the government had suppressed the youths demonstrating for their rights with batons and pellet guns. According to Kharge, the backlash followed the withdrawal of protests based on promises from the government.

Kharge’s criticism extended to the alleged retaliation against the students who ceased their protest, which he asserts was done under the condition that no punitive measures would follow. He maintained that the government reneged on this promise by taking legal action, which he termed as acts of revenge against those exercising their democratic rights.

Claims of Online Harassment and Suppression

Furthermore, Kharge accused the government of blocking social media accounts of the protesting youth and facilitating the public exposure of their identities, commonly referred to as doxxing. He indicated that the government’s actions demonstrate a level of arrogance, as evidenced by Amit Shah’s avoidance of the Parliament during such a critical moment. Kharge asserted that Shah failed to address the issues raised regarding accountability in the ongoing situation.

According to Kharge, the tactics employed by the government to manage its image are no longer effective, asserting that the youth are aware of the harsh realities surrounding them. He emphasised that the government’s actions towards the younger population signify a broader pattern of disrespect and disregard for their voices. The discontent among young people towards government actions has become increasingly vocal, prompting further political uproar.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has taken a similar stance, intensifying his criticism regarding the government’s treatment of the younger generation. He echoed Kharge’s sentiments, accusing PM Modi and Amit Shah of attempting to silence Gen Z through intimidation, legal actions, and by eliminating their social media presence.

Calls for Independent Investigation

On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi called for an independent investigation overseen by the Supreme Court regarding the police’s alleged use of force against student protesters. He urged the establishment of a high-powered committee to ensure an impartial scrutiny of the events that unfolded during the protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 20.

Gandhi’s comments reinforced the demand for transparency and accountability, which have become central themes as students and political leaders continue to question the legitimacy of the government’s actions. His remarks also highlighted the growing unease among younger citizens regarding the government’s approach to dissent and civil liberties.

The situation remains a contentious issue within the political landscape as the Congress Party advocates for the rights of protesters and seeks redress for alleged abuses. With ongoing public unrest and increasing political scrutiny, the ramifications of these protests are expected to resonate throughout the current political discourse.
