Bengaluru witnessed the inauguration of the 14th Edition of the India Nano 2026 Conference on August 4, 2026, led by Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The event was attended by notable figures including Bharat Ratna Prof. C. N. R. Rao, who serves as the Honorary Chairman of the Vision Group on Nanotechnology, and Dr. Indumati Rao, Honorary Coordinator of the Education Technology Unit at JNCASR. Minister for Home, IT BT, Shri Priyank Kharge, and various distinguished scientists and innovators were also present.

Government’s Commitment to Scientific Research

During his address, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar emphasised the Karnataka Government’s dedication to fostering an environment conducive to scientific research. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that scientific discoveries transition smoothly from laboratories to industrial applications. The Chief Minister asserted the government’s resolve to stand with scientists, researchers, startups, and young innovators in their efforts to develop technologies for real-world challenges.

“Our Government remains committed to creating an ecosystem where research is encouraged, and discoveries lead to commercial products,” he said, reinforcing the idea that practical applications stemming from research initiatives are crucial for societal advancement.

The Chief Minister further acknowledged the need for private companies to enhance their involvement in high-value research and intellectual property development within Bengaluru. By encouraging these businesses to move up the value chain, he underscored an aspiration for the city to remain a global leader in technological advancement.

Focus on Intellectual Property and Patents

DK Shivakumar articulated a call to global firms to position themselves higher in the research hierarchy, suggesting that they should focus on generating intellectual property in Bengaluru. He urged academic institutions to prioritise patent generation alongside scholarly publications, which can significantly contribute to innovation.

“Bengaluru has already demonstrated its capability in software innovation, and we must ensure that the next phase of global technological leadership emerges from Karnataka,” he said. This reflects a strategic push towards deep technologies that could create job opportunities, reinforce the economy, and provide societal benefits.

The Chief Minister also took the opportunity to spotlight Karnataka’s pivotal role in the broader landscape of science and technology across India. He claimed that the state serves as the foundational centre for scientific development in the nation.

Karnataka’s Historical Link to Science and Innovation

In his remarks to reporters following the inauguration, CM Shivakumar noted the significant historical legacy of the Indian Institute of Science, established approximately 125 years ago. He expressed pride in the institution for producing many of the world’s leading professionals in various fields of science and technology.

“We are the root of science and technology for the entire country,” he stated, pointing out that the advancements and reputations associated with the institute reflect the state’s commitment to education and research.

Concluding his address, Shivakumar expressed optimism for collaboration among the Karnataka Government, emerging entrepreneurs, startups, and major industry leaders. He believes that such partnerships will propel the state toward substantial advancements in technology and innovation, thereby enhancing its reputation as a leading hub for scientific research and development.
