2026 Passport Henley Index: India Jumps to 80th Place for Global Travel Mobility

The CSR Journal Magazine

The latest Henley Passport Index for 2026 has ranked the world’s strongest passports, highlighting how easily citizens can travel across borders without the need for a visa. Singapore has maintained its position at the top of the list, offering passport holders access to 192 destinations without prior visa requirements. The index reflects data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and indicates global mobility trends.

Following Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates are tied for second place, each allowing access to 188 destinations. Sweden ranks fourth with a visa-free entry to 187 locations, while several European nations, including Belgium, Denmark, and France, share the fifth rank, providing access to 186 destinations. Austria and Greece have a standing of 185 destinations, similar to New Zealand and Switzerland. Meanwhile, Australia and the United Kingdom, along with Canada and Malaysia, have a rating of 183 destinations. The United States completes the top ten with access to 179 countries.

India’s Position in 2026

The 2026 Henley Passport Index places India in the 80th position, representing an improvement of five ranks from the previous year. Indian passport holders now enjoy access to 56 destinations, which includes those reachable through visa-free travel, visa-on-arrival, or electronic travel authorisation. This gradual ascent in rank underlines ongoing advancements in global mobility for Indian citizens, enhancing prospects for travel related to leisure, business, and education.

Despite still trailing behind several developed nations in terms of travel freedom, the improving status indicates a potential for increased access to various international destinations. The Indian passport continues to facilitate a growing array of travel opportunities, aiming to ease the visa process for its holders.

Reasons for Singapore’s Leading Status

Singapore’s consistent ranking at the top of the passport index can be attributed to its robust network of visa-waiver agreements and solid diplomatic relations. The city-state’s strategic positioning and effective diplomacy have contributed to its strong global standing. Being able to access 192 destinations without prior visa requirements exemplifies the nation’s influence in international travel mobility.

Japan and South Korea also reflect the rising prominence of Asia in global mobility rankings, reinforcing their position as powerful passport nations. The United Arab Emirates has rapidly ascended the ranks in the past two decades, solidifying its status among the world’s leading passports due to effective diplomatic outreach and agreements.

This dynamic demonstrates that a nation’s passport power is not solely reliant on economic metrics. Instead, factors such as international diplomatic relationships and adherence to visa agreements play a crucial role in determining a passport’s strength. Stronger passports typically eliminate the need for extensive visa applications, granting holders greater freedom to pursue global exploration.
