Yogi Adityanath Leads Protest in Lucknow After Women’s Reservation Bill Setback

The CSR Journal Magazine

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spearheaded a politically charged protest in Lucknow on Tuesday, advocating for the Women’s Reservation Bill. The demonstration was part of the “Jan Aakrosh Mahila Padyatra,” a march aimed at voicing discontent over the recent failure of key legislation that sought to provide for 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state Assemblies.

This protest came on the heels of the Lok Sabha’s rejection of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which was predominantly due to a lack of support from the Opposition. The march was intended to galvanise public opinion in favour of women’s rights and empowerment, while simultaneously addressing the Opposition’s role in blocking the proposed legislation.

Yogi Adityanath led the procession at approximately 9 am, accompanied by various Cabinet members. This initiative marks the beginning of a wider campaign by the Uttar Pradesh government aimed at promoting women’s rights throughout the state.

Criticism of Opposition Parties

During the protest, Yogi Adityanath was vocal about his criticisms of the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, characterising their actions as undemocratic and detrimental to women’s interests. He asserted that these parties failed to seize an opportunity provided by Prime Minister Modi to improve their standing on women’s issues.

Adityanath accused the Opposition of trying to obscure their “anti-women” reputation by sabotaging the bill aimed to enhance women’s representation. He claimed that women across the nation were united in opposition to the Congress-led Opposition’s actions. The Chief Minister’s comments were designed to frame women’s reservation not as a privilege, but as a fundamental right for half the country’s population.

The government plans to expand its outreach with a series of programmes from block levels up to district headquarters, drawing in women’s groups and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to create a mass movement. This campaign aims to promote women’s representation and rights in a structured manner across Uttar Pradesh.

Background of the Women’s Reservation Bill

The proposed amendment, which aimed to fast-track women’s reservation by linking it with delimitation based on the 2011 Census, met with significant backlash from Opposition parties. This initiative initially took shape during a special parliamentary session held between April 16 and 18, intended to discuss amendments to the existing women’s reservation law.

Despite the BJP’s assertion that the legislation is essential for enhancing women’s representation in legislative bodies, the Opposition, led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, contended that the bill sought to change the electoral structure rather than genuinely empower women. His sister and Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Gandhi hailed the bill’s failure as a victory for democratic values, questioning the government’s true objectives in introducing such legislation.

In the voting that took place, 298 of the 528 members supported the bill, while 230 opposed, falling short of the required two-thirds majority of 352 votes. This outcome highlighted a significant divide in perspectives on women’s reservation, reflecting the complexities surrounding legislative measures intended to bolster women’s participation in governance.

As the campaign led by Yogi Adityanath unfolds, it is anticipated to escalate in intensity, incorporating door-to-door outreach efforts, public meetings, and rallies. The objective is to counteract the Opposition’s narrative and enhance public awareness and support for women’s rights issues across the state.
