West Bengal Records 78.77% Voter Turnout, Tamil Nadu Sees 70% Participation in Polls

The ongoing Assembly polling in India has seen impressive voter turnout figures, particularly in West Bengal, where the participation rate reached 78.77% by 3 PM on Thursday, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). This level of engagement signifies a robust response from voters in the state, illustrating increased participation in the electoral process.

Several districts in West Bengal exhibited even higher turnout rates, with Dakshin Dinajpur leading at 81.49%. Other districts with significant turnout included Paschim Medinipur at 81.07%, Jhargram at 81.04%, and Birbhum at 80.22%. These figures suggest a highly energised electorate in rural and urban areas alike, contributing to the state’s overall strong performance.

Moreover, Murshidabad reported a turnout of 79.72%, while districts such as Darjeeling and Malda had lower participation figures of 76.54% and 76.22%, respectively. The overall turnout dynamics across these regions signify an enthusiastic response from the electorate to the electoral exercise.

Positive Participation Figures in Tamil Nadu

Although Tamil Nadu’s voter turnout was lower than that of West Bengal, it still made notable advances with a turnout of 70.00% recorded by 3 PM. The turnout displayed by the state’s districts suggests a healthy level of engagement among voters. Notably, Namakkal led Tamil Nadu with a turnout of 76.43%, followed closely by Karur at 76.08%.

Other districts showed steady participation as well, with Salem at 75.79%, Erode at 75.61%, and Tiruppur at 75.38%. Districts such as Dharmapuri and Dindigul followed with turnouts of 74.68% and 74.35%, respectively. These figures collectively contributed to an encouraging environment for democratic participation in the state.

At 1 PM, Tamil Nadu had recorded a 62.18% turnout, while West Bengal was at 56.81%. This highlights a significant pre-lunch surge in voter engagement for both states, indicating an encouraging trend as polling proceedings continued into the afternoon.

Overall Election Scenario in India

Polling for the 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and 152 constituencies in West Bengal commenced amidst tight security measures. Voting will conclude at 6:00 PM on the same day, with the remaining constituencies in West Bengal scheduled for polling on May 29. The counting of votes is slated for May 4.

Tamil Nadu’s Chief Electoral Officer, Archana Patnaik, indicated that the state’s electorate comprises over 5.73 crore voters, which includes approximately 2.93 crore female voters, about 2.80 crore male voters, and 7,728 voters from the third gender. The election commission has also accounted for 14,59,039 first-time voters along with 68,501 service voters, having already received 4,18,541 postal votes.

In West Bengal, the competitive landscape involves multiple parties contesting for 294 Assembly seats. The first phase encompasses 152 constituencies, while the second phase covers 142 seats, with a total of 1,478 candidates competing in this round. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seeking a fourth consecutive term while the BJP aims to increase its seat share following its previous performance.
