Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Organisation Secretary R.S. Bharathi has claimed that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is staging a “drama” through a recently announced meeting of Members of Parliament to discuss the delimitation exercise. Bharathi made these remarks on August 7, 2026, during a press conference held at the DMK headquarters in Anna Arivalayam, Teynampet, Chennai.

According to Bharathi, the Chief Minister’s manoeuvre is an attempt to divert attention from the ongoing Cauvery water dispute. He pointed out that the Delimitation Bill has yet to be introduced in Parliament and described the meeting as a calculated distraction.

Bharathi further stated, “To divert the Cauvery issue, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is staging a drama in the name of a Parliamentary members’ meeting. We have already submitted our suggestions and sought amendments regarding this Bill.” He emphasised that it is premature to discuss the Bill when it has not yet been officially presented.

DMK’s Stance on Delimitation

During his statements, Bharathi also commented on the need for careful consideration regarding the implications of the delimitation exercise. He used the metaphor of naming an unborn child to illustrate that a decision cannot be made without understanding the full context. He remarked, “Delimitation is like an unborn child. We can only name it after seeing whether it is a boy or a girl.” This highlights the DMK’s position that any changes must be evaluated thoroughly before proceeding.

He stressed that DMK leadership will consult with the party president, M.K. Stalin, once the Bill is introduced and the proposed amendments are presented. Bharathi reaffirmed that the party is resolute in its position that Tamil Nadu and other southern states should not face adverse effects from the delimitation process.

Bharathi also pointed out that practical issues, such as the Mekedatu Dam project, should take precedence. He referred to the Leader of Opposition, Udhayanidhi Stalin, who has articulated the importance of addressing water scarcity in Tamil Nadu amid ongoing concerns regarding Karnataka’s plans for the Mekedatu Dam on the Cauvery River.

Government’s Response to Delimitation Meeting

In a related announcement, Tamil Nadu Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar confirmed that, on behalf of the Chief Minister, an all-party meeting concerning the delimitation issue is scheduled for August 8, 2026. This move aims to engage various political stakeholders in dialogue regarding the delimitation exercise.

Despite Bharathi’s assertions, Chief Minister Vijay has reportedly expressed that there is “no need” for such a meeting, indicating confidence in the government’s handling of the matter. This discrepancy of views illustrates the prevailing tension within Tamil Nadu’s political landscape regarding both the delimitation and the Cauvery dispute.

The ongoing debate highlights the urgency of addressing the water issues facing Tamil Nadu, particularly in light of concerns that citizens lack access to adequate drinking water. Issues around the Mekedatu Dam project not only complicate political dynamics but also directly affect the lives of people in the state.
