Weather Change in India: Rain and Hailstorms Expected with Temperature Drops

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has experienced a notable change in its weather, beginning on May 3, 2026. After an extended period of high temperatures, vast regions across the country have witnessed rainfall, although the distribution of this precipitation has not been uniform. In some areas, temperatures continue to remain dangerously elevated.

In Uttarakhand, the Kedarnath Yatra remains ongoing amidst persistent rainfall and challenging weather conditions. Low visibility, accompanied by fog and rain, has led to disruptions in helicopter services in Rudraprayag. Authorities are implementing strict safety measures, and pilgrims with pre-existing flight bookings may experience delays. Trekkers are advised to remain vigilant and equipped with rain gear due to the anticipated wet conditions.

Several states, including Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, reported significant rainfall. West Bengal, Sikkim, and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh also received precipitation, although scattered in nature. In West Uttar Pradesh, some locations experienced particularly heavy rain, with Gunnaur in Sambhal district recording 13 cm and Sahawar in Kasganj logging 10 cm of rain.

Severe Weather Warnings for Upcoming Days

Looking ahead, May 4, 2026, is expected to be a pivotal weather day for many regions in the country. Alerts for adverse weather conditions are in effect across almost all states. Northern India is predicted to encounter scattered to widespread rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds ranging from 30 to 50 kmph, impacting Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh.

Furthermore, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings about sudden and powerful gusts of wind, reaching 50 to 60 kmph and even up to 70 kmph, particularly in Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha. Hailstorms have also been forecast for East Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Odisha, indicating the potential for severe weather conditions.

In the eastern regions, heavy rainfall is anticipated in areas such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and parts of Tamil Nadu, which could lead to further disruptions. Despite the rainy spells, other parts of India, including the southern states, are also bracing for wet conditions and thunderstorms over the next several days.

Temperature Trends and Future Weather Patterns

This shift in weather patterns is attributed to multiple factors, most notably a western disturbance moving through northern India. This weather system brings moisture and instability, with its axis currently observed near Rajasthan and Gujarat. Additionally, forecasters expect another western disturbance to affect the Western Himalayan region from May 10, further contributing to unsettled conditions in the coming week.

Temperature forecasts indicate a decrease of 2 to 4°C in northwest India by May 4-5. However, it is anticipated that temperatures may rebound by 4 to 6°C from May 5 to 9, suggesting that the respite from heat will be temporary. In central India, temperatures are expected to lower by 2 to 3°C through May 6, providing a brief period of relief.

Despite the predictions of cooler weather, isolated pockets in regions such as Andhra Pradesh may continue to experience hot and humid conditions. The overall outlook emphasises the dynamic and increasingly erratic climate patterns affecting the country as the season progresses.
