Monsoon Defies El Nino Threats in July Achieving 101% Excess Rainfall

The southwest monsoon in India made a notable recovery in July, recording 101% of its average rainfall amid predictions of a weakened month due to a strengthening El Nino. The unexpected figures have significantly diminished the rainfall deficit for the season, raising optimism for a generally normal monsoon, though experts still view August and September as crucial periods.

Data shows that the country experienced an average precipitation of 283 mm from July 1 to July 31, compared to the normal 280 mm. This performance has startled meteorologists, particularly since various weather models had forecasted below-normal rainfall, citing the anticipated adverse effects of what was described by some experts as a developing “Super El Nino.”

The sharp increase in rainfall has contributed to a dramatic decrease in the nationwide rainfall deficit, which stood at nearly 40% at the beginning of July but dropped to just 12.6% by month-end. This swift recovery is one of the most significant recorded in recent years.

Factors Influencing the Rainfall Recovery

Meteorologists attribute this turnaround to a succession of low-pressure systems and monsoon depressions that traversed central India, reviving precipitation across extensive regions. The most recent deep depression has intensified monsoon dynamics, particularly promising extremely heavy rainfall in Gujarat.

The next 24 to 36 hours will be pivotal for regions in southern Gujarat, including Surat, where anticipated rainfall could reach between 200 to 400 mm. Weather experts have characterised the deep depression as functioning like a “vacuum cleaner,” pulling moisture and thunderstorms from across India and resulting in concentrated heavy rainfall around its core.

This striking recovery in July has also underscored the limitations in existing seasonal forecasting models. Despite the expectations set by most dynamical climate models for a weaker month due to El Nino conditions, the atmospheric behaviour deviated from these predictions, revealing the complexities inherent in India’s monsoon system.

Future Considerations for the Monsoon Season

While July’s performance offers a promising sign, meteorologists caution that the monsoon season is still ongoing and that the coming months are critical. Specifically, August and September will be essential in determining whether the remaining rainfall deficit can be resolved.

September traditionally marks the period when El Nino tends to exert its strongest impact, making this period vital for agriculture, water reservoirs, and overall water security across India. Experts stress that continued monitoring and enhanced forecasting will be necessary to effectively navigate the ongoing variability in monsoon patterns.

The resilience shown by the monsoon in July may signal the need for advancements in climatic modelling and a stronger network of observations, which would improve the accuracy of month-to-month variability assessments and forecasts in the future.
