Wang Yi Meets PM Modi, Pledges Deeper Trust and Cooperation with India

The CSR Journal Magazine

During a recent meeting in New Delhi, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with India in executing the significant agreements reached by the leaders of both nations. This statement was made in the context of Wang’s attendance at the BRICS National Security Advisers conference, emphasising the importance of enhancing mutual trust and addressing sensitive topics effectively.

Wang Yi highlighted that China aims to bolster mutually beneficial cooperation and maintain a positive trajectory in bilateral relations. He reiterated China’s willingness to work alongside India in advancing the modernisation efforts of both countries, which are considered pivotal for their future development.

Moreover, the Chinese Foreign Minister assured Prime Minister Modi of China’s continued support as India assumes the rotating chair of BRICS this year. He underscored the need to make significant progress within the BRICS framework, acknowledging India’s role in the organisation.

Challenges in India-China Relations

Relations between India and China faced significant challenges over the past two years, particularly following the violent clashes in the Galwan Valley in 2020. This incident marked a period of heightened military tensions that persisted for over four years. However, both nations have initiated various measures aimed at rebuilding their relationship and fostering improved interactions.

The recent dialogue between the two leaders indicates a shift towards restoring a collaborative spirit, with a focus on enhancing trust and dispelling mutual doubts. As two of the largest developing nations, both India and China hold significant influence in the Global South and have a vital role in promoting unity and self-reliance among other nations in the region.

Wang Yi’s remarks point to a collective commitment to addressing ongoing issues and facilitating cooperation. This appears to be a strategic move to strengthen ties as both nations navigate complex global dynamics.

Future Goals for BRICS and Global Cooperation

Amidst changing international circumstances, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun recently emphasized the necessity for BRICS countries to strengthen dialogue and cooperation concerning security concerns. Addressing traditional and non-traditional security threats has surfaced as a critical agenda, and Guo quoted Wang Yi’s comments insisting on the urgency to confront global challenges through a unified BRICS framework.

Looking towards the future, Guo Jiakun conveyed China’s aspirations for its upcoming BRICS chairmanship in 2027. He articulated a vision for fostering a community with a shared future for humanity, supported by four key global initiatives aimed at prosperity, stability, mutual trust, and justice. This forward-looking perspective indicates China’s commitment to collective governance and the international order.

As a significant coalition, BRICS originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group has since expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia expected to join in 2025. Representing nearly 49.5 per cent of the world’s population, 40 per cent of the global GDP, and 26 per cent of international trade, BRICS has established itself as a vital platform in global governance.
