During his address on August 15, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a comprehensive seven-stream framework called ‘Sapta Dhara,’ aimed at guiding India towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. This framework encompasses ‘Raksha Shakti’ to soft power, focusing on defence self-reliance, manufacturing capabilities, technological advancement, connectivity, sustainable development, and the promotion of India’s cultural influence. The Prime Minister highlighted that these streams would enable the country to achieve significant milestones over the next five to seven years.

The first aspect, manufacturing capability, calls for India to establish complete value chains, from small components to final products. PM Modi urged that India should become a globally trusted supply-chain hub, emphasising the need for precision manufacturing to compete effectively on international grounds.

Following this is agriculture and food production. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of food processing and exports, indicating that traditional Indian products such as millets, spices, and fruits should be positioned on the global market. He also promoted chemical-free farming as essential for meeting international standards in agriculture.

Technological and Strategic Enhancements

The third stream focuses on technology and innovation. PM Modi articulated the vision for India to transition from merely consuming emerging technologies to becoming a globally recognised hub for innovation across various fields, including artificial intelligence and quantum technology. He also advocated for the spread of India-made 6G technology worldwide.

Additionally, connectivity and infrastructure under the fourth stream, termed Gati Shakti, were emphasised. PM Modi underlined the need for improving high-speed rail, modern highways, and multimodal logistics, insisting that India’s ports should transform into engines of economic growth.

‘Raksha Shakti’, the fifth pillar, was highlighted as vital for national security. PM Modi noted the necessity for India to develop next-generation defence technologies and become a global supplier in the defence sector, moving away from being solely a consumer of international defence products. He also included cybersecurity in this sphere, indicating a modernised approach to national defence.

Social and Economic Aspirations

In his discourse, the Prime Minister also touched on the green and blue economy, advocating for advancements in renewable energy and coastal tourism, which could create significant job opportunities and contribute to global environmental solutions. Furthermore, PM Modi acknowledged India’s soft power, linking it to cultural practices such as yoga and Ayurveda, asserting that these elements could be globally recognised assets.

Notably, PM Modi encouraged a collaborative effort among citizens, entrusting the youth to drive the transformation of India into a ‘Viksit Bharat’. He referenced over 2.5 lakh startups and the establishment of a Rs 1 lakh crore Research and Innovation Fund, showcasing the government’s commitment to fostering a supportive ecosystem for young entrepreneurs.

While PM Modi’s vision encapsulated a broad array of aspirations for the nation, several opposition leaders offered critiques. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of claiming credit for past initiatives and highlighted the importance of rights-based welfare measures introduced during previous administrations. Other opposition voices raised concerns regarding the feasibility of achieving the ambitious growth rates necessary for the stated developmental goals.
