Volodymyr Zelenskyy Urges EU to Fast-Track Ukraine Membership, Rejects Associate Status

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has articulated that the current moment is optimal for initiating Ukraine’s drive for European Union (EU) membership. He expressed these sentiments during a communication with EU leaders, indicating that a suggestion for associate membership would be detrimental, characterising it as “unfair.”

In a letter directed to the leaders of the EU on 22 May 2026, Zelenskyy argued that associate membership would render Ukraine “voiceless,” as it would lack voting rights. This, he suggested, could hinder Ukraine’s capacity to advocate for its own interests in the broader European context, according to reports from Reuters.

Efforts to secure EU membership have gained momentum from Ukraine, particularly following the recent parliamentary elections in Hungary that led to the removal of Viktor Orban, the former prime minister. Orban’s administration was known for its strong ties with Russia and had employed Hungary’s veto powers to obstruct Ukraine’s accession and delay vital aid approvals.

Rising Tensions as Ukraine and Russia Continue Battlefield Actions

Zelenskyy’s push for EU integration coincides with increasing military hostilities between Kyiv and Moscow. On 21 May, the administrator of the Russian-occupied Luhansk region reported that a drone attack had resulted in the deaths of 10 people, with injuries to 48 others and 11 individuals unaccounted for. The attack reportedly struck a student dormitory in the town of Starobilsk, prompting a response order from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The United Nations expressed concern over the reported incident but clarified that it could not validate the specifics of the event. In response, Kyiv categorically denied any responsibility for the strike on the dormitory, asserting that they targeted a high-value drone command unit while adhering to international humanitarian principles.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military reportedly targeted the Metafrax Chemical plant in Russia’s Perm region, about 1,700 km from the Ukrainian border. Zelenskyy noted that the plant produces materials that supply various Russian military facilities, emphasising the halt of operations at this key site.

Ukraine’s Military Advances and Strategic Targets

In addition to the strike on the chemical plant, Ukraine executed attacks on essential Russian oil infrastructure, targeting a refinery in Yaroslavl. In the port city of Novorossiysk, debris from downed drones resulted in a fire at an oil terminal, leaving at least two individuals injured.

Zelenskyy shared via a post on social media platform X that Ukraine has regained approximately 600 square kilometres of territory since 2026 commenced. He asserted that these territorial gains reflect a shift in momentum, pressuring Moscow to consider negotiations to conclude the ongoing conflict that began in February 2022.

According to Zelenskyy, approximately 86,000 Russian soldiers have reportedly lost their lives since the start of the year, with 59,000 sustaining serious injuries and an additional 800 taken captive. The ongoing military actions have targeted significant Russian economic and military infrastructure, heightening tensions in the region.

Ukrainian officials are raising alarms about a potential new Russian offensive that may be impending, as Russian forces appear to be regrouping along frontline positions, intensifying the already volatile situation in the area.
