In Odisha, teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are actively engaged in rescuing and safely evacuating livestock impacted by recent flooding. These efforts are part of a coordinated response by the state’s Revenue and Disaster Management Department.

Rescue personnel are stationed in Baleshwar district, diligently working to assist both animals and residents displaced by the floods. Relief centres are also providing hygienic, cooked meals and crucial support for families who have been forcibly relocated from their homes.

Minister’s Meeting Assesses Flood Impact and Ongoing Efforts

On July 30, Odisha’s Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Suresh Pujari, conducted a high-level meeting to review the ongoing flood situation, which has been exacerbated by continuous rainfall and rising river levels. Chief Secretary Anu Garg attended this meeting, where they evaluated the state’s response measures.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Minister Pujari stated that close to two lakh people have been affected by the floods, with approximately 30,000 individuals currently sheltered in relief centres. He reassured the public that necessary assistance is being provided to those in need.

Pujari highlighted that the three districts most severely affected by the floods—Bhadrak, Balasore, and Jajpur—are beginning to see some improvement, although the situation remains closely monitored. He noted that emergency services, including six teams from NDRF, ODRAF, and Fire Services personnel, have been dispatched to the vulnerable districts to bolster rescue and relief operations.

Weather Update and Alerts from IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a deep depression over north interior Odisha and parts of south Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh has been moving westwards at a speed of 15 kmph. The system is currently positioned over central Chhattisgarh and adjacent north interior Odisha. Specific coordinates place it near latitude 21.9°N and longitude 83.3°E.

According to the IMD, this system is expected to continue its westward movement across Chhattisgarh and eastern Madhya Pradesh in the next 24 hours. Consequently, an orange alert was issued for July 30, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts, including Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, and Koraput.

As the situation continues to develop, state officials are focused on ensuring that all evacuation and relief processes are executed effectively. The authorities remain vigilant and equipped to deal with further challenges posed by weather conditions in affected areas.
