‘Use Common Sense’: Trump Calls On Iran To Strike A Deal With US

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump has made a direct appeal to Iranian authorities, urging them to seek a diplomatic resolution to ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran. In an interview with CNBC, Trump expressed the belief that Iran could achieve a prosperous future through a new agreement, emphasising the potential benefits of such a shift.

According to the President, entering into negotiations could lead to a substantial improvement in Iran’s regional and economic status. He remarked, “Iran can get themselves on a very good footing if they make a deal,” indicating that a change in circumstances is possible for Tehran.

Maintaining a stance of caution, Trump called on the Iranian government to approach the negotiation process with practicality. He underscored the importance of rational discussion by saying, “They have to use reason and they have to use common sense,” implying these could pave the way for Iran to become a more prosperous nation.

Ceasefire and Ongoing Blockade

In a strategic move, President Trump has opted to extend the indefinite ceasefire rather than maintain an aggressive posture. This development follows reports from Iranian sources claiming that the Revolutionary Guard reportedly targeted and seized three vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Two of those vessels were allegedly escorted into Iranian waters.

The prolonged truce is intended to provide Iranian leaders with extra time to craft a “unified” proposal aimed at resolving the conflict. However, Trump has clarified that the blockade against Iranian ports will continue. This decision has generated substantial opposition from Tehran, particularly from Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament and a chief negotiator.

Qalibaf argued that a thorough ceasefire is illogical if it remains undermined by American maritime restrictions. The ongoing blockade represents what he has described as a “flagrant breach of the ceasefire,” further complicating efforts toward a peaceful resolution.

Uncertain Future of Negotiations

Trump’s announcement regarding the ceasefire extension came just hours before the initial two-week truce was poised to expire. Amidst the uncertainty surrounding the diplomatic timeline, reports indicated that President Trump hinted at the possibility of a second phase of discussions starting as soon as Friday.

According to the New York Post, Trump noted that such talks might be feasible within a timeframe of 36 to 72 hours. Nevertheless, the immediate prospects for negotiations are unclear, with Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei revealing that Tehran has not yet made a final decision on engaging in this next round of mediated talks.

The lack of clarity regarding participation in upcoming discussions highlights the complex dynamics at play as both nations navigate the evolving situation. As diplomatic uncertainties continue, the international community is likely to closely monitor any developments in this delicate relationship.
