The government of Assam is enhancing its relief and rescue initiatives as the ongoing flood situation deteriorates, impacting over 1.70 lakh individuals across 12 districts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced these actions on social media platform X, outlining the necessity for immediate and comprehensive assistance.

In his post, Sarma instructed all Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assemblies from the affected regions to remain vigilant and monitor the developing situation closely. He reassured citizens that the Assam government is committed to providing all possible support necessary to manage the crisis.

As heavy rains continue, the Chief Minister emphasised that the government is intensifying efforts to relocate people to safer areas and ensure access to essential resources. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the adverse effects of the flooding.

Rising Water Levels and Casualties

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the floods have tragically resulted in one drowning incident in the Amguri area of Sivasagar district within the last 24 hours, raising the year’s flood death toll in Assam to five. This loss highlights the critical nature of the ongoing situation.

The severe flooding has disrupted the lives of more than 1.70 lakh residents in districts such as Biswanath, Cachar, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Golaghat, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur, Karbi Anglong, Sivasagar, Udalguri, and Jorhat. Additionally, floodwaters have submerged over 10,362 hectares of agricultural land, posing a threat to local food security and livelihoods.

The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are continuing to rise alarmingly due to relentless rainfall in Assam and neighbouring regions, including Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. The Central Water Commission reported that the Desang River at Desangpani in Charaideo district is flowing above its recorded highest flood level, while other rivers like the Dikhow, Buridehing, Brahmaputra, and Dhansiri (South) are also demonstrating extreme flood conditions.

Deployment of Rescue Teams and Affected Areas

This wave of flooding has impacted a total of 580 villages across 30 revenue circles, necessitating robust response measures. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed to the most severely affected districts, including Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat, to conduct extensive rescue and relief operations.

These teams are tasked with providing much-needed assistance and facilitating the evacuation of residents from inundated areas. The government is working in coordination with various agencies to ensure that relief supplies and medical aid reach those in need as swiftly as possible.

The situation remains fluid, with local authorities continuously assessing conditions to address the emerging challenges posed by the floods. The Assam government is committed to monitoring the evolving circumstances and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens during this critical period.
