US-Iran Talks Continue Through Night in Switzerland Amid Push for Nuclear Deal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Technical negotiations between the United States and Iran under the framework of the recently signed 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) remained underway in Switzerland, with officials from both sides expected to continue discussions through the night as efforts intensified to address key regional and nuclear issues.

Senior US officials said the talks, being held in Burgenstock, have continued without interruption and involve multiple formats of engagement. While earlier reports suggested the negotiations had encountered a temporary setback, diplomats indicated that both sides remained engaged and that back-channel efforts were continuing to maintain momentum.

US and Iranian Teams Remain Engaged

According to CNN, citing US officials, high-level talks involving Vice President JD Vance and the American delegation continued late into Sunday, with participants expected “to work through the night”.

A senior US diplomat involved in the negotiations told the network that Iranian representatives had remained actively engaged throughout the discussions.

“The Iranians are still here, and discussions are ongoing. We anticipate continuing to work through the night,” the diplomat said.

The official added that the Iranian delegation continued to participate in meetings across different formats as diplomatic engagement intensified.

Earlier reports by CNN, citing an Iranian source, suggested that the negotiations had hit a temporary roadblock but had not broken down completely.

The source said informal diplomatic contacts were continuing behind the scenes to encourage both sides to return to the negotiating table despite tensions and comments made by US President Donald Trump.

Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon Among Key Issues

According to US officials, the talks have focused on ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and on mechanisms to implement the ceasefire in southern Lebanon.

“We have also worked through deconfliction mechanisms and enforcing the ceasefire in southern Lebanon,” a US official told CNN.

Axios, citing a US diplomat familiar with the negotiations, reported that maintaining stability in Lebanon and addressing recent concerns over the strategic waterway featured prominently during the first round of discussions.

The diplomat said the United States had conveyed its position on the Strait of Hormuz clearly.

“We made clear we want to ensure it remains fully open. We made good progress on that front,” the diplomat told Axios.

The discussions on Lebanon were aimed at developing deconfliction mechanisms and ensuring compliance with the ceasefire amid continued Israeli strikes in the south of the country.

Nuclear Agreement and MoU Implementation Discussed

Negotiators also reviewed broader elements of a possible nuclear agreement between Washington and Tehran.

According to Axios, talks covered “all elements” of the prospective deal and included discussions related to implementing the 14-point memorandum signed last week.

The diplomat said efforts were focused on ensuring all parties shared a common understanding of the agreement.

Reflecting on the progress achieved during the first round of talks, the official expressed optimism about the atmosphere surrounding the negotiations.

“All four parties seem pleased with how the talks went today. The mediators are helping both sides work through things. We feel this initial round of talks is setting us up for trust-building going forward,” the diplomat said.

Pakistan and Qatar have been acting as mediators in the discussions.

Technical Teams Likely to Stay Beyond Monday

According to Axios, talks involving senior political leaders are expected to conclude on Monday.

However, technical teams from both sides are likely to remain in Switzerland to continue negotiations aimed at advancing the broader diplomatic process.

Despite reports of temporary difficulties, officials from both countries have signalled their intention to keep the dialogue alive, with continued discussions seen as a step towards building trust and laying the groundwork for future agreements.
