Jammu and Kashmir CM Condemns Killing of Labourers in Kulgam Terror Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, has condemned the recent killings of two labourers in Kulgam district, labelling the act as “dastardly” and “senseless.” The statements were made following a terror attack that claimed the lives of these workers, instigating a wave of grief and outrage across the region. Abdullah expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting them during this challenging time.

Compensation Announcement for Victims’ Families

In response to the tragic event, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) announced a financial aid package intended for the families of the deceased. The package includes an ex-gratia relief of ₹10 lakh for each of the families from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. In addition to this amount, local administrative support will further supplement the compensation. The provision signifies an effort to provide immediate financial relief to those affected by the violence.

Furthermore, the local District Administration will contribute an additional ₹6 lakh to each family. This support is aimed at mitigating the financial impact of the loss and addressing the urgent needs of the victims’ next of kin. Abdullah’s comments reflected a deep sorrow over the incident, reinforcing the government’s stand to stand by the families of the victims in their time of grief.

Officials reported that one of the non-local workers, who had been critically injured in the attack on Friday evening in the Kellam area of Kulgam, succumbed to his injuries early Saturday morning. The individual was receiving medical treatment when he passed away, bringing the death toll from the attack to two. This incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by non-local workers in the region.

Security Measures Following the Attack

In the wake of the attack, security forces initiated a cordon of the Kellam area, launching a comprehensive search operation to locate the perpetrators. Police officials observed that the preliminary response involved securing various locations where the attackers could potentially be hiding. This measure is part of a broader strategy to enhance safety in the area and ensure justice for the victims.

Authorities have stated that there is an increased emphasis on the welfare of non-local labourers, who are often targeted during such incidents. Local law enforcement agencies have reactivated their patrols and intelligence operations to monitor potential threats in light of the recent violence. The intention is to ensure the safety of all residents, particularly those who may be vulnerable due to their non-local status.

Community leaders and residents have also voiced their concerns regarding the continued violence and insecurity in the region. They have urged for more robust measures to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of innocent workers who contribute significantly to the local economy. This incident has reignited discussions on the urgent need for reconciliation and peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
