Army Major Dies Following SUV Collision With Camel Near Jaisalmer Military Base

The CSR Journal Magazine

An unfortunate incident resulted in the death of a 30-year-old Indian Army Major and injuries to two other officers when their SUV collided with a camel on the night of July 30, 2026. The vehicle overturned multiple times near the Jaisalmer Military Station in Rajasthan. Major Hamza Arif, a resident of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, was driving the vehicle, which was returning to the military station from the city.

The accident occurred around six kilometres from Jaisalmer district headquarters, close to the War Museum. Police reports indicate that a camel unexpectedly appeared on the road, giving the driver insufficient time to react and avoid the collision. The impact led the SUV to overturn approximately five times, skidding nearly 100 metres before coming to a standstill.

Injuries and Rescues

Army personnel responded promptly after being alerted about the accident, reaching the scene to assist the officers trapped inside the wrecked vehicle. Major Arif was transported to the Army Military Hospital; however, he succumbed to his injuries during medical treatment. The two injured officers, Lieutenant Abhinav Rathore and Lieutenant Ayushman Gusain, were also taken to the same hospital for care, although their current condition has not been publicly confirmed.

Local police officer Jagdish Charan stated that the information regarding the incident was swiftly reported to them, enabling their timely arrival at the crash site. At the location, authorities discovered a deceased camel by the roadside, and the heavily damaged black SUV, bearing registration number GJ39CC1403, was located adjacent to the Army boundary wall.

Community Response and Context

The incident has cast a shadow over the Jaisalmer Military Station, where Major Arif and the other officers were stationed. Colleagues and the local military community are mourning the loss of Major Arif, who had recently celebrated his marriage just a month prior to this tragic event.

This accident occurred at the same intersection where a significant road tragedy took place nearly a year earlier, involving a private bus fire that claimed the lives of 29 passengers, marking it as one of the most devastating road incidents in Rajasthan’s history. Such repetitions of tragic events highlight ongoing concerns regarding road safety in the area.

Authorities may need to consider measures to improve safety conditions on regional roads, especially in areas where wildlife, such as camels, frequently crosses paths with traffic. The community’s safety infrastructure may require reassessment to prevent further accidents and losses of life.
