US Conducts Fresh Wave of Military Strikes Against Iran Targeting Hormuz Transit

The CSR Journal Magazine

The US forces initiated a second series of strikes against Iranian military capacities on July 16, around 3 pm ET, following earlier operations earlier that day. The strikes were intended to counter Iranian threats to vessels traversing the Strait of Hormuz, a pivotal maritime route for global trade. The announcement was made by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) through a post on X, emphasising US accountability under the directives of the Commander in Chief.

According to CENTCOM, the operations specifically targeted military assets that are reportedly being used by Iran to endanger the safety of ships in the Strait. The command maintains that these efforts are necessary to uphold navigational freedoms in this crucial international waterway.

Previous Military Actions and Their Implications

Earlier on the same day, US forces completed an operation beginning at 7:30 am ET, which lasted approximately 90 minutes. This prior operation employed precision-guided munitions to strike Iranian coastal defence systems, as well as cruise missile storage and launch facilities located on Greater Tunb Island. CENTCOM reported that these actions significantly weakened Iran’s capability to threaten commercial shipping in the region.

The second round of strikes was conducted shortly after the morning operation, reflecting a sustained US strategy to mitigate perceived Iranian military threats. CENTCOM asserted that these actions aim to secure the free movement of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a region considered essential for worldwide shipping and commerce.

Subsequent to the strikes, reports from Iranian media indicated explosions in the southern cities of Ahvaz and Chabahar. However, it remains uncertain whether these incidents were directly linked to the US strikes.

Naval Blockade and Ongoing Vigilance

In conjunction with military actions, CENTCOM has enacted a naval blockade on Iranian ports. This blockade was reportedly resumed on July 15, 2023, amid rising tensions in West Asia. CENTCOM officials mentioned that they have been actively redirecting commercial vessels that attempted to breach this blockade, having intercepted two such vessels in the past 17 hours according to a separate post.

The naval blockade is part of a broader strategy involving the deployment of over 20 US naval warships in the region, complemented by hundreds of military aircraft. CENTCOM stated that these preparations underscore their commitment to enforcing compliance with the imposed restrictions on Iranian maritime activities.

As the situation continues to evolve, US military officials maintain a watchful stance, ready to take further action if deemed necessary. CENTCOM has reiterated its focus on safeguarding international navigational rights, particularly in the context of increased tensions in the region.
