UBTech Launches Human-Like Companion Robots with Emotional AI

The CSR Journal Magazine

China-based robotics firm UBTech has introduced a novel humanoid robot aimed at providing companionship, named the UWORLD U1. This robot, unveiled in Shenzhen on June 30, boasts a human-like appearance, silicone skin, and emotional artificial intelligence (AI). The company’s vision centres around enhancing emotional interaction in both domestic and service settings, rather than traditional industrial applications.

Features and Variants of the UWORLD U1

The UWORLD U1 is available in three distinct variants: Lite, Pro, and Ultra, with prices starting at 119,800 yuan (approximately Rs 14 lakh) and reaching up to 990,000 yuan (around Rs 1.15 crore). Reports indicate that within the initial hours of its launch, UBTech had received orders for 13,361 units, indicating considerable consumer interest in humanoid robots.

This robot is designed for daily interaction and emotional support, with potential applications in various fields, including elder care, hospitality, education, and premium home services. Unlike conventional industrial robots, the U1 focuses on engaging naturally with individuals, featuring male and female models that stand at heights of 183 cm and 168 cm, respectively.

The UWORLD U1 is equipped with 88 servo joints, which allow for a wide range of human-like movements. Its silicone exterior aims to create a more realistic appearance, facilitating improved face-to-face interactions with users.

Capabilities of the Emotional AI System

A significant aspect of the UWORLD U1 is its advanced emotional AI system. UBTech claims the robot can identify more than 20 different emotional states and can maintain eye contact during conversations. Additionally, it can remember past interactions, enabling it to offer more personalised responses over time. The emotional AI operates using Rockchip’s RK3588 processor, allowing for efficient on-device processing of conversations without a heavy reliance on cloud services.

Data privacy is a key consideration for UBTech. Information related to user interactions is stored directly on the device, rather than transmitted to the cloud. The company has emphasised a three-layer privacy architecture which prioritises local data processing and minimal dependency on cloud services. This design aims to alleviate privacy concerns commonly associated with AI-powered companion devices.

The company has clearly stated that the UWORLD U1 is intended solely for adult buyers and is specifically designed for companionship and customer-facing environments rather than industrial use. This focus allows the robot to engage in natural communication, enhancing the user experience.

Future Trends in Robotics

The company also unveiled its overarching UWORLD platform, an integration of biomimetic skin technology, embodied AI hardware, operating systems, and emotion-driven language models. UBTech claims that its biomimetic facial expression system allows for synchronization of speech and lip movements within 20 milliseconds. The Agent Memory OS further enables long-term memory and ongoing interactions, allowing the robot to respond proactively to its environment without the requirement of a wake word.
