Elon Musk has made a forecast suggesting that artificial intelligence (AI) will increasingly dominate internet traffic, potentially making humans a minority. This statement follows remarks by Thomas Seifert, the Chief Financial Officer of Cloudflare, which indicated that “humans will be a rounding error on the internet.” Musk affirmed this view on the social media platform X, asserting that AI-driven internet usage will vastly surpass that of humans.

According to Cloudflare’s data from April 2026, AI bots accounted for approximately 57 per cent of all internet traffic based on HTML requests. This statistic underscores a significant disparity that is expected to grow in the coming years, challenging the traditional notion of human internet engagement.

Musk’s comments highlight a shift in the dynamics of online activity, suggesting that the rise of AI agents creates a landscape where human users might struggle to compete in terms of volume of traffic.

Forecast of Future Traffic Ratios

During the earnings call, Thomas Seifert elaborated on the implications of this trend, predicting that in five years, non-human traffic could be up to 1,000 times greater than human traffic. Seifert noted that this increase does not stem from a decrease in human internet usage, but rather from an unprecedented rise in the number of bots online.

AI agents possess the capability to rapidly browse numerous websites for a single query, enabling them to outperform human users significantly. For instance, while a human may take time to compare options across three websites, an AI agent can access hundreds of pages almost instantly. Emerging automated tools, such as OpenClaw, further facilitate the deployment of multiple AI agents, allowing tasks to be completed at an extraordinary scale.

The technology’s advancement has led to quicker than expected changes. Initially, Cloudflare predicted that bots would oust humans in internet traffic by 2027; however, this threshold was reached earlier in April 2026.

Current Human Activity in Context

While bots now dominate traffic related to HTML requests, it is essential to note that humans still constitute about 65 per cent of overall web activity. This distinction indicates that although bots excel in navigation tasks—such as browsing articles and documents—human users maintain a significant presence in other online activities, including app usage and content consumption.

This current balance suggests that, despite the growing influence of AI agents, the human element remains crucial in specific areas of internet activity, particularly within applications and platforms requiring direct human interaction.
