Uber Cuts 10% of Customer Service Jobs as AI Reshapes Operations: Report

The CSR Journal Magazine

Uber Technologies has announced a reduction of 10 per cent of its staff within the customer service division as it enhances its use of artificial intelligence (AI). This decision aims to simplify operations and facilitate a shift towards in-person collaboration by encouraging remote employees to relocate to central office hubs. This move has been reported by Bloomberg.

The layoffs predominantly impact the community operations team, responsible for providing support to riders, drivers, and delivery partners. Uber’s intention is to streamline its organisational structure, allowing for greater efficiency and the potential to fully utilise AI technologies across its services.

In an internal memo, Megha Yethatika, Uber’s Vice President of Global Community Operations, expressed that the existing structure had become overly complex and fragmented. She emphasised that a simpler organisational model is essential to harness the full capabilities of AI effectively.

Second Workforce Reduction In Brief Timeframe

This marks Uber’s second significant workforce reduction in under two months. In June, the company previously cut 23 per cent of its people division, affecting less than 1 per cent of its global total of approximately 34,000 employees. This earlier round of layoffs followed the appointment of a new head for the department and aimed to streamline operations further.

Notably, the current layoffs are the first instance where Uber has explicitly associated job cuts with its AI strategy. This trend mirrors similar actions taken by other technology companies, which have acknowledged the transformative impact of AI on their operations and workforce structuring.

Despite the ongoing reductions, Uber continues to maintain over 500 open positions, particularly in engineering roles that underpin its developing robotaxi partnerships. This indicates a strategic shift towards hiring for AI-related and technology-focused positions.

Broader Implications Of AI Adoption

The trend of linking AI adoption to job changes is not unique to Uber. Other companies, including Block and Oracle, have cited similar reasons for their workforce reductions, reflecting a wider industry movement towards automation of routine tasks and a restructuring of teams around AI capabilities.

The implications of these layoffs indicate that AI’s role in the workplace is evolving beyond merely enhancing productivity. It is becoming a fundamental factor in how technology firms are rethinking their workforce configurations. As organisations increasingly rely on AI-driven tools, it is likely that further shifts within the labour market will occur.

Uber has previously warned that it would decelerate hiring due to its expanding reliance on AI. However, the ongoing recruitment for critical tech roles suggests the company is balancing efficiency improvements through automation with the necessity to acquire talent for future technological advancements.
