The CSR Journal Magazine

A 35-year-old woman with speech and hearing impairments was reportedly kidnapped and gangraped in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district. Two men, aged 55, have been apprehended in connection with the incident, which occurred on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at approximately 4.30 pm. The victim, who works as a daily-wage labourer at a private rice mill, was waiting at a bus stop after finishing her shift.

Allegedly, the accused, identified as S Marimuthu and A Sekar, approached the woman in a car and offered her a ride. When she declined, they forcibly pulled her into their vehicle. The suspects then drove her to a remote area near a pond located in a nearby village, where the alleged assault took place.

Community members heard the victim’s cries for help and gathered at the location. A female constable from the same village was passing by and noticed the situation. She immediately informed the authorities about the ongoing assault, prompting a swift response from the police.

Police Response

Law enforcement arrived at the scene around 8.30 pm, where they discovered the victim in distress. Due to her disabilities, she faced challenges in communicating the specifics of the attack or providing a description of the assailants’ vehicle. Despite these obstacles, the police took quick action to locate one of the perpetrators.

Authorities were able to trace Marimuthu within 24 hours of the incident. The police reported that he was promptly arrested and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. The swift police response has been acknowledged as critical in ensuring a timely resolution to the case.

In contrast, Sekar attempted to evade arrest initially, but law enforcement eventually apprehended him on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. The police have since confirmed the continuous progress of the investigation, which is being conducted by a special team led by an officer of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) rank.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

The two accused men have been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to serious offences including gangrape, sexual harassment, and wrongful restraint. Additionally, they face charges under Section 92(b) of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act due to the victim’s disabilities.

The police highlight the gravity of the situation and the importance of protection for vulnerable individuals in society. Families and residents within the locality are reportedly in shock following the incident, raising concerns about safety in public spaces.

Authorities have indicated that they will continue to monitor the case closely and provide necessary support to the victim. The outcome of this case may serve as a significant reminder of the need for stronger protections for members of the disabled community in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
