TVK MLA Alleges DMK Offered Bribe, Issued Threats to Defect

The CSR Journal Magazine

A recent assertion by a Tamil Nadu Vizhuthugal Katchi (TVK) MLA has brought serious allegations to the forefront, claiming he was offered between Rs 30 crore to Rs 50 crore to switch political allegiance to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Saravanan, the MLA representing Srivaikuntam, made these comments during a media interaction in Thoothukudi. He further described encountering threats to his safety after refusing the offers.

In his statements, Saravanan mentioned that several individuals approached him with offers, saying, “They asked me to join the DMK.” He expressed concern over his wellbeing, alleging that those associated with the DMK had visited his office and issued life threats. He recounted an incident from around 25 days ago when he narrowly escaped a lorry that he claims was directed towards him.

These allegations come amid a backdrop of intense political rivalry in Tamil Nadu, highlighting how allegations of poaching have resurfaced within the political arena. Saravanan’s claims are not isolated; they reflect a pattern of serious accusations regarding the practices employed by rival parties to gain legislative support.

Incidents of Political Rivalry and Allegations from DMK Leaders

Further complicating these accusations, Saravanan has also clashed verbally with DMK leader Anitha Radhakrishnan. Radhakrishnan had previously alleged that Saravanan was arrested to exert pressure on him to leave the Assembly and join TVK. In response, Saravanan insisted that he has the evidence to support his claims.

The political discord escalated after Radhakrishnan faced arrest on July 4 for allegedly making disrespectful remarks about Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Saravanan’s allegations have intensified scrutiny over the interactions between these political factions, particularly in light of the accusations of attempting to poach MLAs.

It has been suggested that Saravanan’s background plays a significant role in these attempts to undermine him, as he belongs to a modest family in a region where political power appears to be concentrated among wealthier individuals.

Recent Developments and Wider Implications

These claims of political poaching from TVK legislators are not singular. In a related account, another TVK MLA, N Elaiyaraja, reported a similar experience, alleging he had been offered Rs 30 crore to Rs 35 crore to join the DMK. He mentioned an intermediary named Thirunavukkarasu, who claimed that multiple MLAs had agreed to the DMK’s inducements.

Elaiyaraja stated, “He said he had already convinced 10 TVK MLAs and one minister,” revealing a concerning nexus that could de-stabilise the current government. He firmly rejected the offer made to him, reaffirming his allegiance to Chief Minister Vijay.

Law enforcement action followed swiftly, with the Tamil Nadu Police apprehending Thirunavukkarasu and his associates Naresh and Thiyagarajan over their alleged attempts to entice TVK MLA members. In connection with the case, the police have also included former DMK minister Senthil Balaji and his brother Ashok Kumar in the FIR, which cites links to the alleged conspiracy.

The DMK has categorically denied the allegations made against them while the political landscape of Tamil Nadu grows increasingly contentious. The recent developments hint at a potential shift, indicating emerging strategies in the political arena, particularly regarding the practices of influencing or poaching MLAs, which have been relatively rare.
