Trump Says “Let Them Play” As Iran Cleared For World Cup 2026 In US

The CSR Journal Magazine

Donald Trump has expressed his support for Iran’s participation in the forthcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. His endorsement follows a statement from FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who confirmed that Iran will compete in Group G matches hosted in the United States.

Iran qualified for the tournament scheduled from June 11 to July 19, 2026, securing their place after a crucial 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan in the final round of AFC qualification in March 2025. Although their qualification was confirmed, several complications arose regarding their participation due to ongoing geopolitical tensions with the United States and Israel.

During a public statement, Trump indicated that he was “okay” with Iran competing, referencing his trust in Infantino’s comments. He remarked, “If Gianni said it, I’m okay. Did Gianni say it?… You know what? Let them play. Well, Gianni’s fantastic, he’s a friend of mine.” Trump’s remarks were reported by Reuters and came directly after Infantino’s confirmation of Iran’s participation.

Political Tensions Highlighted by Absences

Infantino affirmed that Iran will, in fact, play their matches in the United States, underscoring the necessity of unity. He stated, “Let me start at the outset. Of course, Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026. And of course Iran will play in the United States of America. The reason for that is very simple: we have to unite. It is my responsibility, our responsibility.”

Interestingly, the FIFA Congress commenced without the presence of the Iranian delegation, which drew attention to the significant political and logistical challenges associated with Iran’s involvement in the tournament. Iranian football officials, including federation president Mehdi Taj, were anticipated attendees but reportedly turned back at Toronto airport due to what Tehran described as “unacceptable behaviour” from Canadian immigration authorities, despite their possession of valid visas.

This incident on Tuesday has further illuminated the intricate issues surrounding Iran’s participation, which is increasingly viewed as a sensitive topic in light of the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the U.S. and Israel that have heightened since February.

Iran’s Match Schedule and Expectations

Iran is set to commence their World Cup journey on June 16 against New Zealand at the SoFi Stadium in California. Following this opener, they will face Belgium at the same venue on June 22, with their group-stage campaign culminating in a match against Egypt in Seattle on June 27.

These fixtures are significant not only for sporting reasons but also due to the broader implications of Iran’s participation amidst existing international relations. The events surrounding the tournament will be keenly observed, given the political backdrop affecting teams and their respective nations.

As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on Iran’s performance, with their matches likely to attract heightened interest. The significance of this World Cup for Iran may extend beyond football, encompassing elements of diplomacy, international relations, and public opinion.
