External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stressed that the essential areas of energy, food, and health security can no longer be considered assured during his opening remarks at the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with India 2026, held in Manila. He pointed out the increasing dependence on maritime trade, indicating that this reliance could pose challenges. The observance of international law becomes crucial in that context, according to his statement.

Jaishankar further noted that the year 2026 will mark the ASEAN-India Year of Maritime Cooperation, which serves as a timely reminder of the collaborative efforts required to ensure a more stable and secure future for both regions. This cooperation is deemed vital in addressing the potential risks associated with trade and security.

Broad Agenda for India-ASEAN Relations

The minister elaborated on the extensive India-ASEAN agenda, which encompasses areas such as trade and investment, mobility and talent, technology, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, green initiatives, and sustainability. He emphasised that deeper cooperation is essential to de-risk and diversify the various sectors covered by this agenda.

Moreover, Jaishankar’s comments reflect a broader understanding of the interconnectedness in today’s global landscape. He conveyed optimism about the future prospects of both India and the ASEAN region, highlighting their shared goals and interests.

Jaishankar’s remarks come during a significant period for the Philippines, which will assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026. The chairmanship theme, “Navigating Our Future, Together,” is geared towards encouraging regional peace and security, economic integration, and digital transformation for inclusive growth.

Upcoming Meetings and Bilateral Discussions

During his visit to Manila from July 22 to 23, Jaishankar will engage in several high-level meetings under the ASEAN framework, including the ASEAN-India, East Asia Summit, and ASEAN Regional Forum meetings. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that he will also attend a Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which is set to take place alongside the ASEAN-related discussions.

In addition to multilateral engagements, Jaishankar is expected to conduct bilateral meetings with his counterparts from various nations. This showcases India’s commitment to enhancing its relationships within the ASEAN framework and beyond, amid a global environment marked by uncertainty.

The intent behind these discussions is to reinforce alliances and partnerships while ensuring that both India and ASEAN continue to adapt to the evolving geopolitical landscape. Strengthening cooperation is seen as crucial for tackling shared challenges effectively.
