Punjab BJP President Kewal Dhillon stated that there has not been any agreement signed regarding the proposed India-US trade deal and urged farmers to stay calm. His remarks came in response to recent protests by farmers against the deal, which highlighted their concerns about its potential impact on agriculture.

During a ‘Chalo Delhi’ protest at the Shambhu Border, farmers were confronted by police forces, which led to tensions between both parties. Dhillon emphasised that the Prime Minister has made it clear that no deal jeopardises the interests of any farmer, particularly in Punjab. He called on the state’s Chief Minister to collaborate with the BJP and advise farmers that no imminent agreement exists that could disadvantage them.

Dhillon asserted, “The situation is absolutely clear. No deal has been signed yet… Nothing in this deal will harm any farmer, whether in India or Punjab.” This statement was aimed at alleviating fears and reinforcing the notion that discussions regarding the deal are still open and unfinalised.

Response from Haryana Government

The Haryana government has officially received the demands put forward by the farmers’ union and has committed to arranging a meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan or relevant central government officials within the next ten days. This initiative appears to signal a willingness to engage directly with the concerns raised by farmers.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher reported that discussions about future actions would depend on the release of detained leaders Gurnam Singh Chaduni and BM Singh. He conveyed optimism regarding the meeting with the central government, remarking, “Haryana’s Agriculture Minister accepted our memorandum of demands.” He noted that officials had assured farmers of a response within eight to ten days after consultation with the Chief Minister regarding the detained individuals.

In light of the evolving situation, Pandher added that the farmers expect a definitive outcome from the upcoming talks and stressed the importance of timely communication from the government regarding their key demands.

Political Tensions Escalate with Congress Protests

In a separate development, Dhillon responded to protests held by Congress leaders outside the Prime Minister’s residence. He noted that Health Minister JP Nadda engaged with the demonstrators, offering assurance that any wrongdoing on the part of officials would be addressed, stating, “Anyone found guilty will not be spared.”

On the same day, Delhi Police detained several Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, while they were protesting near Lok Kalyan Marg. This demonstration was a reaction to alleged police brutality against unarmed students who were protesting a recent examination paper leak. There were numerous reports of confrontation and unrest during the protests.

The Congress’ actions came on the heels of a contentious political climate, with repeated disruptions occurring in Parliament. This was primarily due to the Opposition’s calls for a comprehensive discussion surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and subsequent police actions against students. The Congress party has continued to insist that the central government take accountability for the controversial examination and the alleged excesses faced by student protesters.
