Three Men Held Near Pathankot Air Force Station with Fake Police IDs Amid Security Alert

The CSR Journal Magazine

Three individuals were arrested near the Indian Air Force (IAF) base in Pathankot, Punjab, for allegedly possessing counterfeit police identity cards. This event occurred just days after twin blasts targeted security facilities in the region, raising security concerns. The trio has been identified as residents of Hoshiarpur district.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Vipan Kumar, reported that the suspects were apprehended at a police checkpoint close to the airbase. Officers detected unusual behaviour from the group, which prompted further scrutiny by police personnel.

Upon questioning, the suspects reportedly failed to provide satisfactory responses about their presence in the area. They initially attempted to pass through the checkpoint by presenting the fake identification, which intensified the police’s suspicions.

Details of the Arrest

The police became increasingly concerned as the trio’s actions raised alarms about potential illicit activities. Following thorough questioning, officials discovered that their ID cards were fraudulent. Consequently, the three men were taken to the police station for further interrogation.

A case has been registered against the suspects, and an investigation is ongoing. DSP Kumar stated that they would be presented before a court for remand soon. The timing of the arrests has heightened the sense of urgency for law enforcement in the wake of recent attacks in the region.

Police have indicated that the use of counterfeit police identification could be linked to broader criminal activities, especially given the timing following the blasts near significant security installations in Punjab.

Context of Recent Security Threats

This incident unfolds less than a week after two explosions occurred near major security establishments in Punjab on May 5. The first explosion was reported outside the Border Security Force’s (BSF) headquarters in Jalandhar, and the second attack took place near an army cantonment in Amritsar.

Local authorities suspect that these attacks may be part of a larger scheme orchestrated by Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, aiming to destabilise the region ahead of the one-year anniversary of Operation Sindoor. Statements from the Punjab’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, suggest that these events align with attempts to provoke unrest in the state.

Yadav emphasised that Punjab is grappling with a proxy conflict against elements in Pakistan. The situation remains tense as law enforcement agencies work to address the threats following recent violent incidents in the state.

Historical Context of Pathankot Airbase

The Pathankot airbase has a history marked by security challenges. It was the site of a significant terror attack in January 2016, when multiple armed terrorists from the Pakistan-based group Jaish-e-Mohammad breached the installation’s outer perimeter.

The attack resulted in the deaths of seven security personnel and one civilian, underscoring the strategic importance of the airbase and the persistent threat posed by terrorist organisations operating in the region.

As security forces continue to patrol and monitor the area, the latest arrests serve as a reminder of the ongoing vigilance required to counter threats to national security. The Punjab police remain dedicated to preventing further incidents and maintaining public safety.
