Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal acknowledged on Saturday that children from Generation Alpha are increasingly voicing their demands for improved infrastructure in government schools. He described this phenomenon as a representation of “true freedom,” especially in the context of the recent Independence Day celebrations. In a message on X, he noted that children nationwide are advocating for essential facilities and better educational conditions.

In his remarks, Kejriwal highlighted notable protests by students in areas such as Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh, Dehradun in Uttarakhand, and Barmer in Rajasthan. He emphasised that these children are not only raising concerns but are actively fighting for their rights and demanding improvements like clean water, proper toilets, and functional classrooms.

Kejriwal underscored that this spirit of advocacy among the younger population is commendable and reflects a shift in attitude towards their rights and quality of education. He believes that such movements among children signify a broader awakening regarding societal issues.

Concern Over Inadequate Infrastructure

Kejriwal also expressed disappointment over the persistent shortcomings in many government schools across India, which he asserted still experience inadequate infrastructure nearly eight decades post-Independence. According to him, many of these institutions suffer from dilapidated facilities, insufficient teaching staff, and a lack of basic amenities such as drinking water and proper sanitation.

He pointed out that these conditions had often been accepted as the norm, but the recent activism from students suggests that the younger generation is beginning to challenge the status quo and demand improvements. This shift illustrates a growing awareness among children about their rights and the state of their educational environment.

On this year’s Independence Day, Kejriwal’s comments invite attention to the ongoing discussions surrounding the quality of public education in various states, highlighting the critical need for enhancements in school infrastructure.

Improvements in Punjab’s Educational Landscape

Diving into the governance record of his party, Kejriwal asserted that the AAP administration has made substantial strides in upgrading government schools in Punjab. He noted that these improvements have enabled students to successfully qualify for competitive examinations such as NEET and JEE, allowing them to pursue professional careers in fields like medicine and engineering.

Kejriwal attributed this progress to the party’s commitment to enhancing educational standards and facilities. He argued that increased participation of younger students in advocating for their educational rights reflects a newfound awareness of these rights, as well as a demand for better learning environments across the country.

As debates on public education quality continue to escalate, Kejriwal’s statements not only mark a significant moment on India’s 80th Independence Day, but also position the ongoing advocacy of children as a pivotal development in addressing educational infrastructure issues statewide.
