The CSR Journal Magazine

The abduction and subsequent murder of a ten-year-old girl in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu has triggered widespread public indignation. Reports indicate the child, who went missing while playing near her home on May 21, was later discovered dead in a water tank area near Kannampalayam. The police informed that her body has been sent for a postmortem examination.

According to local sources and law enforcement authorities, the girl was playing in the vicinity of her residence in Sulur when she vanished. Her parents, having undertaken extensive searches, approached the police to report her missing after failing to locate her. The grim news of her body being found ignited fury among the local community, prompting residents to stage protests demanding immediate accountability and action from the authorities.

Police have reportedly detained two individuals, identified as Karthik and Mohanraj, in connection with this tragic incident. It has been reported that Karthik sustained injuries while allegedly attempting to evade arrest and was subsequently admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Family Demands Assurance from Chief Minister

The family of the deceased girl has made it clear that they will not accept her body from the mortuary until they receive assurances from the Chief Minister regarding justice. The victim’s mother expressed her disappointment, stating that despite their support for change during the elections, there has been a noticeable lack of response from the government. She stressed that it feels as though the government’s promises have not led to any tangible improvement in safety.

Her comments come at a time when opposition parties have escalated their criticisms surrounding the safety of women and children in Tamil Nadu. They argue that the prevailing situation remains dire, echoing sentiments of concern among the public.

Chief Minister Vows Thorough Investigation and Justice

In response to the public outcry, the Chief Minister’s Office released a statement denouncing the crime and assuring expedited action. The statement mournfully acknowledged the incident, describing the act as horrific and intolerable within society. The Chief Minister conveyed heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and confirmed that arrests had already been made.

The Chief Minister has called for a comprehensive and accelerated investigation to be conducted by the police and emphasised the importance of filing the chargesheet at the earliest possible moment. Furthermore, the government has committed to enforcing stringent penalties for those found guilty of crimes against women and children.

Political leaders from the opposition have been vocal in their criticism of the state government’s handling of safety issues. Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai has alleged that, despite governmental changes, the safety situation for women and children has not improved. He claimed the same safety concerns that existed during the previous DMK regime persist today.

AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran condemned the murder, insisting on significant punishment for those involved, while PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss went further by advocating for the death penalty if the charges are substantiated. He also urged the state government to implement stronger measures to ensure the safety of women and children, stating that such heinous acts should never occur again in Tamil Nadu.
