The Tamil Nadu Assembly has passed a resolution opposing the proposed delimitation of parliamentary constituencies and urging the Union Government to permanently retain the Lok Sabha’s current strength of 543 seats. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay moved the resolution on Wednesday, August 12, amid concerns that a population-based delimitation could reduce the political representation of southern states.

Vijay Backs Women’s Reservation Within Existing Seats

Vijay also called for the implementation of 33% reservation for women in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections without waiting for a fresh delimitation exercise. He argued that the quota should be implemented within the existing 543 constituencies and described women’s political representation as an important issue of democratic rights and social justice.

The resolution seeks to maintain the existing inter-state distribution of Lok Sabha seats, protecting Tamil Nadu and other southern states that have successfully pursued population-control measures. Supporters argue that states should not lose parliamentary representation as a consequence of lower population growth.

Concerns Over Southern States’ Representation

The delimitation debate has intensified over concerns that states with larger populations could gain more Lok Sabha seats, potentially changing the balance of political representation between northern and southern India.

Tamil Nadu’s resolution therefore calls for the current allocation of seats among states to be protected while retaining the overall strength of the Lok Sabha at 543. The move reflects the state’s longstanding position that population control should not result in a reduction in its parliamentary influence.

Political Reactions

The resolution has also triggered political debate within Tamil Nadu. The DMK has indicated support for the move, with party spokesperson TKS Elangovan saying it is consistent with the party’s long-standing position on protecting the state’s parliamentary representation.

The resolution now places Tamil Nadu firmly among the states seeking safeguards against any delimitation exercise that could alter their existing representation in Parliament. The issue is expected to remain a major point of political debate ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
