Telangana Minister Stresses Right to Demand Fair Representation in Lok Sabha

The CSR Journal Magazine

Telangana Minister D. Sridhar Babu has articulated that it is not a crime to demand fair representation in the Lok Sabha, highlighting it as a constitutional right for states. He stated that portraying such demands negatively undermines the legitimate aspirations of the people. The Minister posed a rhetorical question, asking whether it was wrong to seek equal rights within the Indian Union and affirmed that these concerns are valid and should be addressed.

Sridhar Babu went on to assert that discussions surrounding proportional representation often overlook the specifics of demographic distributions. He pointed out that simply multiplying the number of seats in larger states by a factor does not equate to fair democratic processes. The disparities in representation are a focal point of his argument, calling the attention of policymakers to the inadequacies in the current system.

Call for Addressing Southern States’ Concerns

In his statements, Sridhar Babu urged that the central government should take heed of the concerns raised by southern states including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. He emphasised that the government has an obligation to address the worries of the populace in these areas. According to him, merely increasing the number of seats does not equate to enhanced political representation for these states.

He reiterated that discussions around increasing Lok Sabha seats should be comprehensive and more reflective of the political realities faced by these southern states. It should not just be a numerical adjustment, but rather a substantive enhancement of representation that truly reflects the demographic and political dynamics of the region.

The Minister’s remarks come in light of ongoing deliberations regarding the allocation of Lok Sabha seats during the delimitation process. He highlighted that a more equitable approach should be adopted to ensure fair representation for all regions of the country.

Chief Minister’s Call for Action and Legislative Developments

Prior to Sridhar Babu’s comments, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had also made an appeal for a sustained movement against the Union government concerning the allocation of seats based on a pro-rata principle. This call to action reflects a growing sentiment among southern states regarding representation that aligns more closely with their population and interests.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha has been engaged in discussions related to several significant pieces of legislation, including the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026. This Bill proposes a 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies, alongside amendments to expand these provisions to union territories. The Delimitation Bill, currently under consideration, aims to revise and increase constituency numbers, potentially raising the total to 850.

A recent session of the Lok Sabha spanned 12 hours, focusing on revisions to the women’s reservation bill, marking a significant amount of parliamentary time dedicated to these critical issues. This highlights the ongoing efforts to reform representation in the political landscape of India, which has invoked substantial discussion across various regions.
