He stated, “Violence on youths, sending them to jail, going to their homes and threatening them, registering cases against them, scaring children… this cannot be tolerated. We want the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.” His statements reflect a broader concern regarding the treatment of students and the use of force by law enforcement.

Yadav reaffirmed his support for the broader opposition movement and promised that the protest would escalate. He expressed determination to continue advocating for youth rights alongside leaders such as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi until Amit Shah steps down. He claimed that the government’s actions are jeopardising the future of students.

Amidst the protest, considerable police presence was noted as security measures were heightened to manage the crowd. Protests such as this highlight ongoing tensions between student bodies and government authorities, particularly around issues of civil liberties and governance.

Parliamentary Discontent Over Police Action

In tandem with street protests, both Houses of Parliament experienced multiple adjournments due to opposition demands for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah concerning the events of a previous student protest on July 20, 2023. Opposition leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, called for both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to address the alleged police brutality and “missing funds” related to the protests.

Kharge specifically condemned the government’s response to the July 20 demonstration at Jantar Mantar, stating brutal measures were employed against protestors. Allegations included the use of excessive force, including beating students, employing pellet guns, and firing tear gas. The opposition is pushing for clarity from the top officials regarding the rationale behind such actions and demanding accountability.

Opposition parties have amplified their critiques of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, particularly concerning the reported use of lathi-charges and pellet guns by Delhi Police during the aforementioned student protest. The growing discontent among opposition figures reflects a significant escalation in parliamentary rhetoric concerning student rights and government accountability.
