Tamil Nadu’s Excise Minister Alleges Rs 100 crore Monthly Revenue Leak Under DMK Government

The CSR Journal Magazine

Excise Minister Vignesh claimed that the previous DMK government had been involved in a substantial financial misconduct related to liquor distribution in Tamil Nadu. On June 5, the minister announced that these alleged practices resulted in unofficial collections exceeding Rs 100 crore each month. These additional charges reportedly exceeded the official prices established by the state, raising serious concerns about the integrity of revenue collection in the sector.

In his remarks during an address in Coimbatore, Vignesh detailed the specifics of the charges, stating that an extra Rs 90 was collected for each liquor case, Rs 40 for each beer case, and Rs 20 for every wine case sold. He alleged that these funds were diverted primarily for the benefit of political party funds and individuals involved in the distribution. Such claims underscore the need for transparency in the state’s revenue-generating sectors.

Crackdown on Revenue Leakages Initiated

The minister also mentioned that the current TVK government has commenced a comprehensive crackdown on these practices. As part of this initiative, he estimates that the state could potentially recover nearly Rs 1,200 crore annually from regularising these revenue flows. This move is aimed at fortifying the integrity of revenue collection mechanisms and ensuring that the state treasury benefits from every legitimate sale of alcohol.

Vignesh cited that approximately 88 lakh liquor cases were sold annually under these alleged unofficial charge practices, which could cumulatively amount to revenue leakages reaching thousands of crores. This statement amplifies the urgency of addressing such financial inconsistencies and preventing future occurrences.

During the initial Cabinet meeting held on June 5, Chief Minister Vijay reportedly instructed officials to take immediate actions to eliminate revenue leakages. The minister reiterated that the Chief Minister’s emphasis was on ensuring that every rupee owed to the government should duly reach the treasury. He also underscored the importance of not tolerating any form of unofficial collection that would siphon off public funds.

Political Implications and Response

Vignesh accused several private individuals, political entities, and their associates of reaping benefits from the alleged illegal collections operational in the liquor distribution system under the previous government. While he reiterated the TVK government’s commitment to addressing these issues, the opposition, specifically the DMK, had not yet responded to the claims made regarding these financial irregularities.

The ongoing measures aim to promote accountability and transparency in liquor sales across the state. Officials within the TVK government are working collaboratively to prevent any future loss of revenue that could benefit the state administration. The focus remains on enforcing legal price structures and ensuring that revenues from liquor sales directly support state initiatives.

As the situation develops, further scrutiny regarding the alleged practices is anticipated. The government’s stance indicates a significant shift towards addressing corruption in the excise system, with hopes of restoring faith in the governance process and ensuring fair practices for all stakeholders involved in the liquor trade in Tamil Nadu.
