Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor has publicly condemned the central government’s approach to managing recent protests in New Delhi, labelling the situation as indicative of a “death of democracy.” During a press interaction, Tharoor highlighted the significance of addressing students’ issues, particularly concerning alleged paper leaks, within parliament. He emphasised that not acknowledging these pressing concerns represents a failure of political responsibility.

Tharoor, along with other Congress leaders, donned black attire as a form of protest on the parliamentary grounds, signifying mourning for democratic values. He stated, “This is protest and mourning as we can witness the death of democracy.” The Congress MP articulated that the distress among students, deemed the future of the nation, must be acknowledged, thus calling for government engagement with affected individuals.

The MP expressed his astonishment at the government’s response, describing the use of force as an inappropriate measure. “The government has allowed matters to get out of hand,” he remarked, referring to the alleged violence perpetrated against protesting students. Tharoor recounted his interactions with several injured students, which left a profound impact on him, noting incidents of brutality, including physical assaults by law enforcement.

Allegations of Police Violence and Public Sentiment

Tharoor detailed alarming reports of police violence against peaceful protesters, including instances of a young man being attacked while distributing water and a young woman’s account of being mishandled by police personnel. He indicated that many students were taken aback by the severity of the police response, with reports of individuals in plain clothes reportedly brandishing sticks with nails attached.

The emotional toll witnessed during these interactions has prompted Tharoor to urge the government to consider the perspectives of these students. Raeganising that such experiences are traumatic, he asserted that it is crucial for the government to re-evaluate its approach to student grievances and the broader implications for democracy.

Further, he raised questions regarding the rationale behind temporarily closing 16 metro stations during the protests, seeking clarity on the perceived threats that necessitated such a drastic measure. His remarks aimed to highlight the potential for overreaching security measures that create unnecessary fear and chaos within the city.

Metro Station Closures and Government Response

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officially confirmed the short-term closure of 16 metro stations citing security concerns amidst the protests. Important stations like Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, and Central Secretariat have been affected, although other metro connections remain functional at major hubs. The DMRC is maintaining operational flexibility while addressing safety protocols.

These operational disruptions have led to public frustration, as commuters encounter significant inconveniences during a period of heightened unrest. Critics, including Tharoor, expressed confusion regarding the necessity of closing key transport routes when no clear threats to the metro system were evident.

As the situation evolves, calls for dialogue between the government and students grow louder. With the protests underscoring deeper structural issues, the response from authorities will likely continue to face scrutiny.
