Slovak Envoy Calls PM Modi’s Upcoming Visit a Historic Opportunity for Bilateral Ties

The CSR Journal Magazine

Slovak Ambassador to India Robert Maxian has described PM Modi’s upcoming visit to Slovakia as a “historic opportunity” that will further strengthen relations between the two countries.

PM Modi is scheduled to undertake a state visit to Slovakia from June 14 to 16, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Central European nation since Slovakia gained independence in 1993.

In a video message issued ahead of the visit, Maxian welcomed the Prime Minister and expressed hope that the trip would usher in a new phase in bilateral relations.

“Prime Minister’s visit to Slovakia is a historic opportunity in the relations between India and Slovakia. We hope that this visit will further strengthen the relations between India and Slovakia,” the envoy said.

The visit comes amid growing engagement between the two countries following President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit to Slovakia in April 2025 and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini’s trip to India for the AI Impact Summit in February this year.

Ceremonial Welcome And High-Level Talks Planned

PM Modi is expected to arrive in Bratislava on June 14 and will receive a ceremonial welcome at the city’s historic castle the following day.

During the visit, the Prime Minister will hold delegation-level and one-on-one talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. He is also scheduled to meet Slovak President Peter Pellegrini at the Presidential Palace, where a state banquet will be hosted in his honour.

The visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to cooperation across several sectors, including trade, technology and defence.

Defence Cooperation Enters New Phase

Earlier this week, Ambassador Maxian highlighted the evolution of defence ties between the two countries, noting that Slovakia has been a reliable supplier of defence technologies to India since 1993.

Speaking to ANI, he said Slovakia had been among the major suppliers of military hardware to India and had worked extensively with Indian public sector units, ordnance factories and the Ministry of Defence.

According to Maxian, the nature of cooperation has changed significantly over the past three decades due to India’s push for indigenous defence manufacturing.

He noted that increasing domestic production in India has expanded collaboration into the private sector, with several joint projects currently under way.

Slovakia Now Imports Defence Technologies From India

The Slovak envoy said an interesting feature of the partnership is that Slovakia has also emerged as a buyer of Indian defence technologies.

He said this reflected the growing capabilities of India’s defence industry and underscored the mutually beneficial nature of the relationship.

With PM Modi’s landmark visit set to become the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia, both countries are expected to explore new avenues of cooperation and further elevate their bilateral partnership.
