S. A. Chandrasekhar Reveals Political & Piracy Hurdles Behind Delays in Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’

The CSR Journal Magazine

S A Chandrasekhar, a renowned actor and director, recently expressed his views regarding the various delays impacting his son Vijay’s film, Jana Nayagan. The film has faced numerous setbacks since its intended release in January. Chandrasekhar shared in an interview that Vijay had anticipated the difficulties that would arise due to the film’s political context and the timing of its release.

Highlighting the interconnected issues, Chandrasekhar mentioned that the film’s political overtones and its affiliation with Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), contributed to its challenges. The film has been unable to secure a censor certificate and has reportedly fallen victim to piracy, complicating its release further.

The assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, scheduled for April 23, have also resulted in delays. The timing of the election, he noted, is a significant factor affecting the film’s ability to release smoothly.

Vijay Forewarned the Producer

During the discussion, SA Chandrasekhar revealed that Vijay had communicated with the film’s producer about the potential hurdles before filming commenced. He recalled a moment from an audio launch event held in Malaysia, where Vijay stated, “See, you are making a film when I am heading to politics. I hope you are aware of the hurdles the film would face. Are you okay with that?” This conversation indicated Vijay’s awareness of the challenges ahead.

Chandrasekhar remarked that they would have been surprised if the film had seen a release without encountering issues. This foresight, he believes, is why they are not taken aback by the ongoing difficulties. “We are not shocked,” he emphasised in the interview, reinforcing the notion that expectations of problems were firmly set from the outset.

Regarding the film’s unfortunate online leak, Chandrasekhar described those responsible as having “criminal minds,” asserting that such actions disturb the financial landscape of the industry. He went on to address speculation regarding the involvement of opposition parties, deeming those thoughts primarily conjectural.

Film’s Notable Cast and Directorial Team

Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan boasts a cast that includes prominent actors such as Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani, all playing significant roles. Initially, the film was slated to debut during the Pongal festival in January, but various legal and procedural issues have pushed its release further.

In addition to the complications surrounding its release, the film’s piracy situation has led the filmmakers to take serious action. Following a formal complaint lodged with the Chennai Cyber Crime police, nine individuals have been apprehended in connection with the illicit distribution of the film. This includes a freelance editor responsible for accessing and sharing the film’s footage, which subsequently spread across various pirated platforms.

The Chennai Cyber Crime wing has confirmed that these arrests were made to combat further unlawful distribution and protect the film’s integrity. The ongoing situation highlights the challenges filmmakers face in the modern digital landscape, as piracy continues to threaten the viability of new releases.
