Rebel Trinamool Faction Plans Separate Shaheed Diwas Rally on July 21

The CSR Journal Magazine

Arup Roy, chairperson of a rebel faction within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), confirmed that his group intends to hold its own Shaheed Diwas rally on July 21. He emphasised the political right of all groups to organise public events. This announcement comes as tensions escalate within the TMC, with two factions planning distinct rallies on the same date, which is traditionally marked by the party to honour its fallen leaders.

Roy’s remarks were reported during a conversation with ANI, where he addressed the notion of conflicting events. He conveyed a sense of determination, highlighting that various political organisations, including those led by Mamata Banerjee and Congress, have the right to conduct their programmes. He stated, “You will see the rally when it happens… Let them. Everyone has the right to do it.”

Mamata Banerjee Urges Leaders to Decide Before Rally

The announcement from Roy follows a recent video message from Mamata Banerjee, the TMC supremo and former Chief Minister of West Bengal. In her statement, she appealed to any party leaders contemplating resignation to do so prior to the rally on July 21. Her message suggested that while those experiencing pressure are free to make their choices, clarity before the event is preferable.

Banerjee’s appeal seeks to maintain unity within her faction as the political landscape becomes increasingly fragmented. She addressed the recent resignation of actor-turned-politician Koel Mallick, who formally informed party leadership of her departure before resigning from the Rajya Sabha. Reports indicate that Mallick had met with Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan earlier on July 16 to facilitate her resignation.

Banerjee also called upon state authorities to uphold neutrality during the rallies planned for July 21. She reassured her supporters that the event orchestrated by her faction would proceed peacefully and stay compliant with court directives.

Political Unrest and Factional Changes in TMC

The political climate within the TMC has intensified in recent weeks, characterised by a series of defections to the rebel faction led by Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee. This shift in allegiance has significantly impacted the leadership dynamics within the party, leading to growing uncertainties about its future.

The most recent defection came from former minister Madan Mitra, who joined Roy’s faction on July 15, indicating a continuous trend of leaders abandoning Mamata Banerjee’s camp. While these departures represent significant challenges, Banerjee has expressed confidence in her ability to revitalize the party’s standing and cohesion.

In her recent statements, Banerjee reiterated her belief that she has successfully reinvigorated the TMC in the past and is prepared to do so again if required. Despite the escalating defections, she maintains that her faction remains committed to its principles and is focused on reconnecting with its base ahead of the upcoming events.
