“Anti-National Forces Targeted Sukhbir Badal”: Shiromani Akali Dal Demands Probe After Nanded Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal was attacked with a dagger at a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, on August 13. Following the assault, Badal claimed that the incident was aimed at undermining the stability of Punjab and India. Upon arriving at Delhi airport the next day, he reiterated his commitment to countering what he described as “anti-national” forces.

According to District Collector Rahul Kardele, Badal sustained an injury measuring approximately five centimetres on his right forearm during the attack. A police officer from the Special Protection Unit who was present at the scene also incurred injuries while trying to shield Badal, but both individuals are reportedly stable and out of danger.

Law enforcement authorities confirmed that the alleged attacker, identified as Jaspal Singh, has been taken into custody for further legal action. Nanded’s Superintendent of Police, Nilabh Rohan, mentioned that Singh, said to be in his sixties, had been serving as a sevadar at the gurdwara for roughly two years.

Badal Describes Attack as Part of Larger Conspiracy

Badal, speaking to reporters after his hospital discharge on August 14, 2023, framed the attack as a component of a broader scheme aiming to disrupt political stability in Punjab ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. He noted that the attack appeared to be designed to create turmoil and disturb the peace within the region.

The SAD leader emphasised his determination to prevent such disruptions, stating, “Their mission is to take control of the situation in Punjab, which I will never allow.” He referenced a prior assassination attempt that occurred in December 2024 at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, where he was targeted in a shooting incident.

Badal expressed his resolve in the face of threats, saying, “I have never been scared, nor am I afraid now. Shiromani Akali Dal is committed to the brotherhood and pride of Punjab.” He underscored the party’s dedication to maintaining progress and harmony in Punjab, reiterating that protecting communal and religious integrity remains a priority.

Political Reactions and Implications

The incident has sparked reactions from several political quarters, with leaders expressing concern over the safety of political figures in Punjab and across India. Badal’s assertions regarding the intentions behind the attack have brought attention to the intersection of politics and security in the region.

Given the upcoming assembly elections in 2027, the repercussions of this incident may influence the political landscape in Punjab. The SAD has historically positioned itself as a protector of Punjab’s interests, and Badal’s remarks reflect an ongoing narrative in regional politics concerning stability and security.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on determining the broader motivations and implications surrounding the attack. The SAD has vowed to confront any forces perceived as threats to the region’s stability, while law enforcement agencies work to ensure that the situation remains under control.
