Railway Assistant Sub-Inspector Detained for Impersonating Senior Mumbai Police Officer

The CSR Journal Magazine

An assistant sub-inspector of the railway police has been taken into custody for allegedly impersonating a deputy commissioner of police and defrauding multiple victims of lakhs of rupees. According to official reports released on Saturday, the individual in question, Mohammad Gaus Ibrahim Khatib, was purportedly using the alias “DCP Dr Raj Khatiba” for nearly a decade.

It has been reported that Khatib created a false identity to gain the trust of unsuspecting individuals, subsequently extracting money from them. Under the veneer of a senior Mumbai police officer, he allegedly employed forged identification documents, maintained a structured image, and fostered connections within influential circles to assure potential victims of his credibility.

Officials stated that Khatib’s methods included promising assistance in securing loans, facilitating the recovery of outstanding payments, and arranging employment within the police force, all in exchange for financial payments. His false persona was bolstered by an active presence on social media, where he shared videos and photographs of himself associating with high-profile figures.

Details of Fraudulent Activities

The investigation commenced following a complaint from an individual who claimed that Khatib had collected Rs 10 lakh as processing charges in connection with a car loan valued at Rs 1.6 crore. When the anticipated loan did not materialise, the individual sought assistance from the Mumbai police headquarters. A subsequent inquiry revealed that no officer by the name of Dr Raj Khatiba was registered in the police force.

In response, Crime Branch Unit III mounted a sting operation, luring Khatib with a purported deal worth Rs 48 lakh to a hotel in Andheri, where he was arrested. The ongoing investigation has indicated that Khatib is also detained in another cheating case involving Rs 12 lakh extracted from a youth under the false promise of securing a police job.

It has been noted that Khatib, in his capacity as an assistant sub-inspector, possessed insight into police procedures, protocols, and operations. In 2015-16, he allegedly masqueraded as an assistant commissioner of police before transitioning to the DCP persona. So far, authorities have identified four distinct cases where he allegedly defrauded individuals, amassing a total of Rs 48 lakh in the process.

Ongoing Investigation and Implications

The police have indicated that the current investigation has uncovered Khatib’s repeated use of false credentials and his extensive knowledge of police operations as key elements in his fraudulent activities. The scam has thus far highlighted his ability to exploit public trust, raising concerns about the broader implications for law enforcement integrity.

Authorities are anticipating that more victims may come forward with allegations as the investigation advances. The law enforcement agencies are keen to ascertain the full extent of Khatib’s activities and encourage anyone who suspects they may have been targeted by similar methods to report their experiences.

As Khatib awaits further judicial proceedings, the case continues to generate interest due to the audacity of the alleged crimes and the potential ripple effects on public confidence in the police force. The Mumbai police are committed to ensuring thorough investigation and justice for all victims involved.
