Rahul Gandhi Expresses Support for Workers’ Protest in Noida

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rahul Gandhi, a Member of Parliament for the Congress party, has expressed his solidarity with the workers protesting in Noida. This demonstration is centred around demands for higher minimum wages amid ongoing economic difficulties faced by labourers. The protests, which escalated in violence on the previous day, included incidents of stone-pelting and the destruction of vehicles following confrontations with law enforcement.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Gandhi articulated that the unrest reflects a broader issue affecting the workforce across the country. He emphasised that the frustrations of these workers, who feel ignored and undervalued, have culminated in this display of dissent. According to him, a worker in Noida earns a monthly remuneration of ₹12,000, whereas housing costs can range from ₹4,000 to ₹7,000, making their financial situation precarious.

Gandhi further highlighted that the meagre annual wage increase of ₹300 is often overshadowed by a corresponding hike in rental costs, exacerbating the struggles of these workers. His remarks suggest that this conflict is not merely a localised issue, but one that resonates with labour movements throughout India.

Economic Struggles Tied to Inflation and Reform

Further elaborating on the situation, Gandhi attributed the current labour challenges to rising inflation and stagnant wages, which he claims are placing increasing pressure on workers and driving them deeper into debt. He referred to this predicament as the “truth of developed India,” advocating for the rights of the protesting workforce.

A female worker involved in the protests shared her concerns, noting that while gas prices continue to rise, wages have not followed suit. Reports indicate that some households are spending around ₹5,000 for a gas cylinder during this ongoing energy crisis. Gandhi asserted that this issue transcends the local context of Noida, as fuel costs are surging globally due to various external pressures, including geopolitical tensions.

In his comments, Gandhi scrutinised the implications of recent government labour reforms, specifically the implementation of four Labour Codes in November 2025. He pointed out that these changes have increased permitted working hours to 12 hours per day without adequate consultation with the workforce. This, he posits, places an unreasonable burden on workers, many of whom are compelled to take loans to meet essential expenses like school fees for their children.

Call for Fair Compensation and Labour Rights

Gandhi concluded his remarks by emphasising that the demands of the Noida workers for a salary increase to ₹20,000 are not a matter of greed but represent a fundamental right essential for their livelihoods. He reaffirmed his support for these workers, characterising them as the backbone of the nation who, according to him, have become exploited under the current administration.

He articulated that these protests are emblematic of a larger fight for justice and fair treatment within the workforce. The Congress MP’s statements aim to resonate with broader societal concerns regarding fair wages, economic survival, and the rights of workers in a rapidly changing economic landscape.

The situation in Noida serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by workers across various sectors in India. As the protests continue, the reactions from both the government and other political entities will likely shape the future of labour rights and economic policies in the country.
