Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, emphasising the urgent need to address deficiencies within the education system in India. This statement was made following her release from Mandir Marg Police Station, where she was detained during a protest advocating for the rights of students. Gandhi asserted that the government’s failure to listen to young voices undermines democratic principles.

Addressing reporters, Gandhi stated, “What is the problem in listening to the children of our country, the future of our nation? They have a genuine demand… As their representatives, it is our responsibility to raise and empower their voices.” She also reiterated the significance of protest as a right within a democratic framework and emphasised the collective responsibility to champion student concerns.

Gandhi further highlighted disparities in government spending, questioning why substantial amounts had been allocated for the waiving of loans to corporate entities such as Adani and Ambani, while the educational sector received comparatively limited funding. “Rs 16 lakh crore worth of loans of Adani-Ambani were waived. But only Rs 1.4 lakh crore were spent on the entire country’s education,” she noted.

Concerns Over Government Response

Priyanka Gandhi accused the current government of suppressing democratic rights, particularly concerning the actions taken against her and other opposition leaders during the protests. She stated that attempts to hold discussions in Parliament had been met with hostility and resistance. “If the Leader of the Opposition wishes to speak in Parliament, he is not allowed to do so,” she remarked.

Her comments follow the detention of notable Congress figures, including Rahul Gandhi and Charanjit Singh Channi, during a demonstration demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Education Minister Pradhan. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge remarked that the detentions were indicative of a government acting out of fear in response to opposition pressures.

Furthermore, Kharge condemned the government’s approach, accusing it of failing to address significant issues within the educational framework, including exam paper leaks and student fatalities. He asserted that democracy is being undermined through the use of force against peaceful protests, and stressed the necessity for parliamentary discourse on educational reforms.

Wider Reactions to the Protests

The demonstrations saw participation from Congress workers across various regions, with protests reported in Bengaluru and Jammu, where Congress state leaders expressed solidarity with national leaders. In Jammu, Congress President Tariq Hamid Karra led a protest outside the Governor’s House, emphasising the need for democratic accountability.

Mehbooba Mufti, leader of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP), also voiced her support for the Congress’s demand for accountability, highlighting the implications of the government’s actions on democracy. She remarked on the paradox of a government that employs suppressive measures against its critics, alluding to Rahul Gandhi’s message to the youth to remain unafraid.

The incidents surrounding the protests and the subsequent detentions have sparked a broader discussion about the state of democracy in India, with many asserting that the government’s response signals a concerning trend towards authoritarianism.
