Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) MLA Jairam Kumar Mahato has expressed strong disapproval of the police’s handling of a recent protest by students in Ranchi. Mahato described the police’s actions as a “cowardly act,” following reports of lathi charges aimed at students during a demonstration by aspirants of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). He argued that the incident has “deeply tarnished” the reputation of the police force.

In a statement to ANI, Mahato remarked that the day’s protest was largely peaceful until the evening when the situation escalated. He alleged that the police deceived the students by promising dialogue and then resorting to violence under the cover of night, asserting that this conduct revealed a troubling approach to law enforcement.

Mahato claimed that not only were male demonstrators affected, but women participants also faced police aggression. He highlighted concerns over the absence of female officers during the confrontations, alleging that women were specifically targeted by male police personnel.

Future Support for Protesters Considered

In light of the events, Mahato announced that the JLKM would soon decide on the next steps to support the protesting students. He stated, “We stood together during the protest, and we will continue to stand together in the future,” indicating a commitment to advocate for the students’ demands.

The protests were triggered by allegations of irregularities in the JSSC-CGL examinations, with participants calling for the cancellation of the examination, a CBI investigation into these complaints, and substantial reforms in the recruitment process. The aspirants felt that their previous requests had not been adequately addressed by the state authorities.

The police response included the use of lathi charges and water cannons to control the crowd, actions that have drawn public scrutiny and calls for accountability from various quarters.

Government’s Stance on Student Rights and Dialogue

Jharkhand’s Chief Minister Hemant Soren has acknowledged the students’ right to express their concerns, reaffirming the government’s commitment to resolving issues through dialogue. In a message posted on X, Soren expressed gratitude towards administrative and law enforcement officials for managing the protest with a sense of responsibility and restraint.

Soren urged students to avoid being swayed by political agendas, advocating for a resolution based on “dialogue and mutual trust.” His comments underscore the government’s intent to engage with protestors in a constructive manner and prioritise student grievances.

The situation has prompted discussions on the appropriate balance between maintaining public order and respecting the rights of citizens to protest. As further developments unfold, it remains to be seen how both the government and the police will address the concerns raised by the demonstrators and ensure a more collaborative approach moving forward.
