Principal in Uttar Pradesh Denies Allegations Following Viral Confrontation with Parent

The CSR Journal Magazine

A recent confrontation between the principal of a school in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, and a parent has gained significant attention online. The altercation, which took place on April 24 at Sunbeam School located in the Civil Lines area, features principal Mamta Mishra engaging in a heated exchange with parent Neelam Verma. The altercation was recorded by another parent and subsequently circulated widely across various social media platforms.

Details of the Dispute

The dispute reportedly arose when Neelam Verma visited the school to collect her daughter, Alisha, who is in UKG. Verma claims that, despite having purchased the required course material, the school demanded she purchase four additional notebooks valued at approximately Rs 1,200 exclusively from them. According to Verma, the issue escalated when her daughter began returning home without any homework due to the lack of these specific notebooks. In response, Verma allegedly requested an extension of fifteen days to procure the required items, but the principal declined her request.

Verma has since stated that during the confrontation, Mishra used offensive language, labelling her as “illiterate” and “uncultured,” and threatened to remove her child’s name from the school rolls. Following the incident, Verma lodged a complaint with the District Magistrate through the IGRS portal to address her grievances.

The viral video has drawn sharp criticism from parents who are concerned about the practices of private schools regarding material purchases. Many have voiced apprehension over the financial burdens that are allegedly placed on families, particularly concerning school supplies and textbooks.

Principal’s Response

In response to the allegations, principal Mamta Mishra posted a video statement on Facebook, asserting that Verma had been pressuring her to lessen the school fees. Mishra described the incident as occurring during a school vaccination drive, and maintained that she had asked Verma multiple times to discuss the matter at a later time instead of during the drive.

While acknowledging that her communication may have been harsh, Mishra contended that the context of the earlier interactions was not captured in the video, suggesting that such context is crucial for understanding the situation. She defended the school’s fee structure, which she claims is Rs 1,300 for primary classes, questioning the validity of Verma’s complaint in that regard.

The principal’s comments have initiated a discussion about the role of private educational institutions in relation to their pricing strategies and relationships with parents.

Ongoing Investigation

Following the widespread backlash, Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Dr Ajit Singh confirmed that an initial inquiry has been initiated into the incident. A three-member team has been established to investigate the matter further. The outcome of this investigation will determine whether any breaches of legal norms or the Right to Education Act have occurred.

The incident has not only put Sunbeam School under scrutiny but has also reignited a broader conversation regarding transparency and accountability within the private education sector. Parents and education advocates are calling for clearer regulations to protect the rights of students and their families.

As the investigation progresses and more information comes to light, the implications of this confrontation may extend beyond just this single incident, highlighting significant concerns within the sphere of educational practices in India.
