Prada Enters Space Race with High-Tech Lunar Garment for NASA Astronauts

The CSR Journal Magazine

Italian luxury fashion house Prada has taken another major step into the aerospace sector by unveiling a sophisticated cooling garment designed for NASA astronauts preparing for future lunar missions. Developed in partnership with Houston-based Axiom Space, the new Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG) will serve as a critical inner layer beneath astronauts’ spacesuits during missions to the Moon.

The announcement highlights the growing intersection between fashion, advanced materials science, and space technology, as luxury brands increasingly seek opportunities in emerging industries.

Designed for the Harsh Conditions of the Moon

The LCVG is engineered to be worn directly against an astronaut’s body inside the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit. The garment contains a network of integrated tubes that circulate cooling liquid and manage airflow, helping astronauts maintain safe body temperatures during lunar exploration.

According to Axiom Space, the system is designed to protect astronauts operating in extreme lunar environments where temperatures can fluctuate dramatically. The garment also contributes to ventilation and overall comfort during long-duration moonwalks.

Prada’s expertise in engineered textiles and high-performance materials played a significant role in the garment’s development. The company helped identify specialized fibers and knitting techniques intended to improve durability, flexibility, and long-term wearability.

Strategic Expansion Beyond Fashion

Industry experts view the collaboration as more than a technological achievement. The partnership positions Prada at the forefront of a growing space economy that includes commercial spaceflight and space tourism.

Luxury brand analysts note that as companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin continue expanding private space travel, premium brands are seeking ways to connect with affluent consumers interested in future space experiences. The collaboration also allows Prada to strengthen its reputation as an innovation-driven company rather than solely a fashion label.

The project follows Prada’s earlier involvement in developing components of Axiom Space’s next-generation lunar spacesuit unveiled for NASA’s Artemis program.

A New Trend in the Luxury Industry

Prada is not alone in exploring space-related ventures. Other apparel companies, including Under Armour and Columbia Sportswear, have also partnered with aerospace firms to develop specialized materials and technologies.

However, Prada’s direct involvement in astronaut equipment places it among the first major luxury fashion houses to establish a tangible presence in the space sector. As NASA prepares for future lunar missions, the collaboration demonstrates how cutting-edge engineering and luxury craftsmanship are increasingly working together to support the next era of human exploration.
